savetheinformation.com pop-ups

This has been by far the toughest malware/spyware to remove. My daughters computer (XP Pro) has constant and multiple pop-ups stating my system resources are low due to a virus/trojan, security issues as stated by savetheinformation.com pop-ups. They want me to click on the balloon to download software to rid myself of this problem, but of course we do not.

I have followed the "Read & Run Me First - Malware Removal Guide" tread and followed it as best as I could. I could only run the online virus scans on normal boot, and the Panda scan could not run despite my three attempts (I used Kaspersky online scan instead). Also I had to use AVG as CounterSpy would not load.

I will attach the various logs & reports. Many thanks for those that can assist.

    The remaining files...

I hope I got all the files right!

I must also mention I ran a SuperAntiSpyware scan after following the guide as nothing worked. It did solve my problem for a day but it came back today.

You have no service packs installed!! That is a serious threat to your system....

Uninstall Counterspy and then disable all anti-spyware and ant-virus software while we do this.
    To Disable Spybot's TeaTimer

    * Run Spybot and click Mode
    * Select Advanced Mode.
    * Then click Tools and select Resident.
    * Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    * Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    * and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    * Now quit Spybot!

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

    Attach new logs for:
    ShowNew
    GetRunKeys
    HJT
    Avenger

    TimW,

I still have the pop-ups but I'm wondering if that is my fault. Did you want me to scan my computer with Spybot as well. I was confused if you just wanted me uncheck teatimer and the misc items AND scan or not.

I may have screwed up on Avenger as well because while it was running after the reboot I noticed some errors being reported. I guess you will see these in the reports. Thanks very much for the help.

PS this site will not allow me to attach the other two files, ShowNew
GetRunKeys saying that I have already attached these on this tread. Do I need to rename them after second scan?

Yes...I want you to turn off TeaTimer as directed and also your security software while we do the fixes. Do them in the order listed.

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Diner Dash

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

    Attach new logs for:
    ShowNew
    GetRunKeys
    HJT
    Avenger

    Thanks again TimW,

I run the above items in safe mode (except for the reports) because I wanted to make sure I didn't have any security programs running. Hope this was correct.

    Here are the files.

Do the following in normal mode:
Download this file to your desktop - Combofix.exe
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Then:
Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Attach new logs for:
    HJT
    GetRunKeys
    ComboFix

Here are the files you have requested.

A couple of questions if I may. After the system is all clear should my daughter change any passwords she has entered while infected. I read that this walware/trojan? is a keylogger.

I had an error reported while running Combofix...

    Unexpected error occurred!
Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(?.exe).

Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have.

This message has been copied to your clipboard.

I will send the info as asked above. I think I'm attaching the most recent Combofix report?

    Thanks!

It is always a good idea to change passwords after an infection ....better to be safe than sorry as they say.

Don't worry about the error with Combo ..it ran OK.

We still have two items that don't want to go bye bye ....let's see if we can fix this.

Now download the attached chodefix.zip file (see the bottom of this message) to your Desktop or someplace else you will be able to find it. The extract the two files from it. Then double click on the chodefix.bat file. This will try to fix some of the damage caused by the Chode infection that you have. You should see a message like the below when it finishes (in about 3 seconds). Quote:
    - Hidden and System file viewing enabled
    - Viewing file name extensions enabled
    - Enabled Registry Edits
    - Enabled Admin Page
    - Deleted some Chode-W related files if found
    - Imported registry patch
    - Hosts file was set back to default settings!

Hit the F5 function key or click refresh in Windows Explorer
    to see the effects!

Press any key to continue . . .
Tell me if you see this message or not or if you get an error message instead. No matter what happens just continue on to the next steps.

    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    * Now click the 'Done' button.

    Here is the Avenger file.

By the way I have system restore on as per the procedure outlined in the "Read & Run Me First - Malware Removal Guide" thread. Will that make a difference?

    Ok...that go it....
Your logs look clean. You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including CounterSpy, etc).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
