    Running W98se...

My CD RW failed, and I only have a read for the moment, so I can't save downloads on CD... I keep my downloads on the desktop, in case a software "hicups".. so I can immediately uninstall and reinstall it, to heal glitches... but now all these icons are taking up too much space on the desktop.. and they won't go into folders.. and if I save a shortcut, and delete the desktop icon, the download deletes too... How do I make a folder that will save all those downloads in one place, out of view, off the desktop?..

Go into your my documents and create a folder. Name it whatever ye want.

Then drag all these icons into said folder.

Next, right click on the folder and select "Send to..." Desktop.

Or right click, and drag the icon of the folder you created to the desktop. When you let go of the right mouse button (on the desktop), a menu will appear. Left click on, "Create shortcut". This will create a shortcut that holds all these other icons. If you were to delete this shortcut, you will not delete the files in question.

I've tried that move, and more...

When I save the download in a file it saves only as a shortcut..
Then when I delete the download from the desktop, it's gone, and the shortcut points to nothing..
I want to retain these downloads, and I want to put them all in a file that isn't on the desktop.. but when I try to move a download to any kind of file, it saved as a shortcut, and the download icon remains on the desktop...

There must be a file system that can hold a downloaded software..?

Finally found the trick... Right click the dektop download icon, and paste it in D partition... then delete it from C desktop...

I set up a Folder called "Downloads" and simply point my download manager to download into that Folder.
No need for individual shortcuts on the desktop.
Just one shortcut to C:\Downloads, or D:\Downloads, as appropriate.

I also keep a copy of all Downloads, updated, on a USB memory stick, that I take with me everywhere. Never know hen someone needs help.

I also right click on the finished download, select Properties and then Summary, and type in in any Comments that I want to in the Comments field.
Press OK to exit and your comments are stored. No need to click Apply, first

You will need to rightclick in your Downloads folder, anywhere in the Headings line (next to Name, for example, and you can select extra columns to appear.

I always add Date Created and Comments.
Your previously saved Comments will then appear beside each entry.

Very handy if you forget why you downloaded a particular file and the name is not very helpful. Bazza

Ok.. I'm using Irfan.. but something strange has happened... Irfan won't view my floppy's pix:confused:... Maybe there's trouble with the floppy drivers..? I'll do a driver update... It's these floppy glitches that puzzle me the worst...
