Scan Disk Freezes

I experienced a black out the other day and my computer shut down unexpectedly. When I logged in the other day my computer wanted to run a scan disk. but for some odd reason my computer never finishes the scan disk, it just locks up at 40% complete. So unless I hit the space bar before the scan disk starts, it always locks up. I have tried a disk defrag, running adware and other spy removal tools but no such luck. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I'm running xp professional. I did try hitting F8 and went to safe mode, then the screen went to a full page of stuff like this,muti(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1/windows/AppPatch/drvmain.stb and it freezes at this point.

I would recommend booting off your Windows cd and running chkdsk from there. All you have to do is boot off the cd; press 'r' at the first screen where it says press 'r' to go to the recover console; log in to your installation of windows, which should be pretty straightforward; type in "chkdsk c: /r" and press enter. Make sure to note any errors corrected or any bad sectors.
