scandisk & safemode problem

I'm unable to get windows XP to run a scandisk on startup, it keeps saying it's unable to access the volume!
Does anyone have any idea's as to what's going on there, I thought nothing could block scandisk from the volume at start-up, it's lost me.

I've tried to get my pc to start in safe-mode to perform my weekly clear-up, low and behold the pc wont do safe-mode start-up. It starts to install the drivers to run in safe mode then freezes when loading a file called 'Mup.sys', it just sits there doing nothing, then the hard drive goes into overdrive, then it does nothing and so and so on!
I've never known this problem before and am just as lost with this as with the scandisk, any help would be gratefully received.

Sounds like your Harddisk is going down hill. I would backup the most important files (Mail/Pictures/Documents/Music/etc.) and then use the Windows Install CD to boot to the Recovery Console and perform the following command:

 

Thanks for the advice there Snake, I gave it a blast, alas it solved nothing, I am grateful for your reply none the less.
I'm going to try and get a new hard drive, but that is proving a major headache for me. If you know anything about hard drives I've posted a thread in hardware about choosing a hard drive, perhaps you could help me further there.
