    2 questions.

Should they be in different threads? I realise this is a third question ;)

Q1 Does win XP have scandisk? Can't find it but told I should run it.

Q2 This file appears on my desktop (greyed out). I want to see all hidden files except this one but seems no way to hide it. Any thoughts.

    Cheers

In XP it is called ChkDsk, which does basically everything scandisk does.
As for the hidden file, I dunno about that, hopefully someone else can answer that.

Thanks. That was easy...with Chkdsk is there any way to have it spit out a log file. The report after the start up was only on the screen for a nano second.

Still wondering about my thumb file.

That thumbs file is a "feature" of Windows XP. It appears in any folder that have pictures or movies stored in them, by default. It stores a thumbnail of each picture kept in that folder. Basically, it's a preview of each file, so you don't have to open 10 files to find what you're looking for. Unless you are using the Thumbnail View for a folder, it's just a waste of space.

To turn them off, open My Computer, click on Tools, then Options, then click on the View tab. Then tick the box next to Do not cache thumbnails.

And for the chkdsk log location, it is located in the Event Viewer (according to http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_20901905.html). The steps for getting there are about halfway down, along with what to look for, and how the results look.

    Thanks noahawk,

Found that log. Great! Re the thumb thing. Did as you suggested but no change.

Hmm, I'm wondering if it makes the change for future folders, but doesn't remove thumbs.db from folders that currently have one... or if it will no longer update the thumbs.db file if you add media files to the folder...

You could always delete it and see if it comes back now - I haven't made the change myself, so I can't be of much more help.

So deleting it won't give me any problems?

No, but, if thumbnails are turned on, it will re-create it.
