I purchased a new HP computer last month: a1350n with 3BG RAM, AMD Athlon 64. etc etc....fast with huge image files. Nice. I hired a certified tech to set stuff up. Everything was hunkdory. I had an HP 1210 all-in-one printer, scanner, copier attached--printer and copier worked fine. Also an HP S20 slide scanner which works just fine. The tech installed the updated software for the HP 1210. All was right in the universe, until....

...until last week I tried to scan a doc on the HP 1210 for the first time--forgot to check scanner function when the tech was setting up. I got the dreaded "Cannot communicate with scanner" error--see below. I uninstalled the software and re-installed. Nothing. I got mad and went to the city and purchased a new Canon MP 150 all-in-one. Installed it and the printer works fine, but I still get the damn "Cannot communicate with scanner" error. I updated the drivers from Canon...I was told I have the latest stuff.

    ARRGHH!!

There is some glitch in my system that will not allow communication with the scanner function. As noted, the HP S20 scanner works fine.

    Any help?! Thank you.

    SOLVED!!!
You Cannot Simultaneously Use Multiple USB Scanners in Windows XP

For the record, this is a Code 38 error.

    Found this...

It implies both scanners can't be used at the same time. In reality, they both can't be connected at the same time. Weird Bill Gates stuff. I am keeping the new printer scanner anyway because this one has a couple of better features.

The solution is a P.I.T.A., but workable.
To work around this issue, connect and use one scanner at a time. To use the second scanner, disconnect the first scanner from the USB port, restart the computer, and then connect the second scanner. To use the first scanner, disconnect the second scanner from the USB port, restart the computer, and then connect the first scanner.
