    Hi,

I did read through the FAQ etc but did not find a procedure for this so here goes:

    1. I stupidly clicked on a link on a forum that lead to a malicious web site. At that web site a prompt popped up (it asked about Java or Active X, can't remember which) and I declined and then left the web site.

Others were infected and the following information was dug up about the virus (I have no idea what this means):

I was running up to date Vista with Adaware 2008, Spywareblaster, S&D, Firefox (Adblock but not NoScript). My external HD was plugged in at the time.

    2. Another forum member suggested to re-format so I did (I was about to anyway for other reasons). I reinstalled Vista, updated it, and am now running AntiVir Personal, Spywareblaster, S&D, Firefox (with Adblock & NoScript), but I have not yet plugged the external HD back in.

    My question is:

Is there a chance I got the virus even though I clicked NO on the popup? And if I did catch it, is there a chance it can be hiding on my external HD waiting to infect my computer again once I plug it in?

If I'm at risk, what can I do to not have to throw away everything I had stored on my USB HD? As I understand it from the links above there's no guarantee that my virus software will catch the virus if it's there. :confused

Thank you in advance for any help!

Yes! You should never click anything in a popup. Not even the X to close it since it may have been modified to run a script. The best solution (even though it could be too late already) is to lock the internet with your firewall (or unplug the cable if your firewall does not have this feature) then kill the window for the process using Task Manager or another similar process manager.

    Potentially.

Run full scans of all of your disk drives including the external drives. Also run our cleaning procedure and attach the logs we request. We cannot properly guide you without the logs.

There is never a guarantee that you are clean after having an infection. There are just probabilities that you are or aren't. It all depends on what infections you had and we don't know what you had since you have not run our cleaning procedure.

    Ok here we go.

The reason I did not run any scans was that I had unplugged the USB drive, and then re-formated my computer. I didn't want to plug the USB drive in again to do a scan as that would risk re-infecting the computer.

I've plugged in the USB drive into another computer now though, and have run all scans.

    Note:

    - When running ComboFix it gave me a warning that my AV was not deactivated as it should be, however I had followed the instructions and deactivated it (AntiVir). So I ran Combofix despite this message.

    - When installing Malwarebyte I received error "732 (0, 0), which I suspect was that it was unable to install the latest update. I manually updated the program sucessfully after installation was complete.

    - In addition to the suggested scans I also ran 2 extra scans with my AntiVIR, as I found that I could scan for viruses and rootkits specifically on my USB drive. These logs are also attached (note that MB.exe, ie Malwarebyte, was found by AntiVir as a trojan horse, but I did not take any action).

The AntiVir rootkit scan log is too big to be attached. It's 13.4 MB. As I said, when it ran it notified me of MB.exe, but nothing else. Let me know if there's something in that log file that you need to look at.

I don't know why it got so big, tried it again. Find it attached.

You need to attach the MGlogs.zip file from running MGtools. However the logs you have attached thus far do not show any problems.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
