    Before I start I want to thank chaslang for helping me with my last computer. It was deeply compromised. Chaslang, you are the best!

    I have inherited a used computer from my parents. It needs to be cleaned of any viruses that are present and I believe the registry has some problems. It has Windows XP Professional (32-bit) with SP3.

    I have run all the scans and have attached the logs.

    The main problem that I have noticed happens when I right click icons on the desktop. When I right click icons, the start menu, etc..., the Windows Installer box opens with the message "Preparing to install....". Then after 15 seconds it vanishes and the right click menu opens up. This Windows Installer box also opens when I highlight a file and press delete.

    Also when trying to remove programs in the Add/Remove Programs utility, a message box opens up claiming that the Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.

    Another problem is the slow start-up when I turn the computer on. I think there are a number of programs that load at start-up that are useless to me. But I really don't know which ones are necessary. I want to streamline my computer and get rid of all the useless garbage on it.

    I have searched extensively for solutions to these problems but I thought I should leave it to the professionals at Major geeks.

    Yes this is an older computer but I can't afford a new one. If it can be fixed, it will serve all my needs.

    Thank You

    Having software such as the below installed probably hasn't helped. Alot of these so called reg cleaners are dangerous to use.

    • Registry Repair Wizard

    What exactly are you using for anti virus at the moment? It looks like you haven't gotten round to installing protection yet but you should once we have finished here install antivirus and a third party firewall.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\Tasks\ParetoLogic Registration.job
    c:\windows\Tasks\ParetoLogic Update Version2.job
    c:\windows\Tasks.\exmlchiq.job
    c:\windows\Tasks\exmlchiq.job
    C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\SET593.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\SET67E.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\SET73C.tmp
    Folder::
    c:\program files\Common Files\ParetoLogic
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670}\NoExplorer]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now go to this MGTools and download the new version of MGtools.exe. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    Run the new MGTools.exe and attach the C:\Mglogs.zip that it creates into your next response.

    Tell me how things are running.

    Thank you Kestrel13! for your prompt reply.

    You are absolutely correct about the Registry Repair Wizard. In the wrong hands it can be very dangerous. I'm not sure who installed that on this computer or if it was used. My parents probably hired someone to repair this computer. My guess is that that person probably installed that software. I would like to erase any trace of it.

    Once this computer is cleaned up I will install Avira as my virus protection software. It has worked great for me in the past. I will have to choose a 3rd party firewall also.

    I ran the scans you requested and have attached the logs.

    There has been no change in the computer. All of the same problems are present.

    Thank you

    Your logs are clean. It may be that some registry items were incorrectly removed. You could try doing a repair installation, though I don't think that will fix any registry errors. So, if you have your xp cd, you may wish to save your personal data and files, then do a reformat and clean install. The system itself seems to be quite adequate for any needs you may have for it. :major

    TimW,

    I'm happy to hear that my computers logs are clean.

    What are my options if I can't track down the Windows XP CD? Is there a way to diagnose and restore the missing registry items?

    Thank You.

    Doubtful. If you have the original sticker with the xp install key on it, you can borrow a disc as long as it is the same version as what you have on the machine ie: Home, Pro, OEM.

    You may wish to post in the software forum to see if anyone can suggest other options to your remaining issues.

    You're welcome :) Safe surfing

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
