I have a 10mb connection to the school network and have a ethernet card that will support it and I was wondering what i could do to speed up the connection. I play counter-strike and I was originally getting a 35 ping on a server and now i am lucky to get 95 ping on the same server. Any suggestions please let me know. I have done a bandwith test and am getting like 415kb which sucks bad. Thanks for your time.

only way to speed it up is to speed up the source. thats just as fast as thier transmitting. or there is something wrong in the middle. i don't think the signal should be lost like that.

10mbps is a slow LAN, whats your school's Internet Connection speed?

More than likely its just T-1 or a fractional T-1 which allows your 1.5 up and down if all channels are used for data.

Once all your room mates start downloading its gonna straggle your gameplay. My School has horribly slow speeds during the day time. Speeds up once evening classes start, I think its cause its a huge wireless network and 100+ people transmitting at 5mbps isnt fast.

I just wanted to more or less agree with everyone else. I had our schools "high speed" internet when I was actually on campus (which wasn't too long) and it was plagued with low speed and horribly malfunctioning routers that would reset on 15 minute increments. But it even had a good backbone, was fiber to all buildings, and they had multiple OC3 and DS3 connections. The biggest leech on my schools resources was P2P file trading which took up 99% of the bandwidth after a week into the semester. When I was there on weekends where other people went home I could dl at 5mb/sec but during weekdays i was lucky to get 5kb/sec. My school eventually started "attempting" to block ports used by P2P but since most of them are adjustable that only took the edge off the problem.
