I live in Minnesota. About 2 hours away from where this happened. I am still in shock. So many questions.
I tried posting a link, but couldn't. If you do a search for Jeff Weise you'll read about it. He is the shooter. Shot and killed 9 people, then himself.

My two youngest are 16 and 17. When I asked them if they had talked about this in school, the answer was I got was yea, sort of. The day after it happened. To me, we all need to talk about what is going on with our kids. Talking to my sister, her kids said the same thing.
Are we getting "used" to these? Are we getting "desensitized"? Does anyone care? What can we do if anything?
Guess I want to hear some other people's thoughts. Might be a good, interesting thread.

    I agree with that g1
But, also to add some more fuel to the fire (just a saying) I was reading he was on Prozac and his dosage had just been upped the week before. I have heard horror stories about Prozac and kids. Needs lots of monitoring.

I quite agree, you know when it comes to any form of social control I always ask myself Cui Bono.

Let's face it if you think Big Pharma has your best interests at heart you probably need medication.

What's this I hear about the plan to test all American children for mental health problems and treat them against the parents wishes if deemed useful?

    Soma anyone?

after taking a class at the college for journalism, when a writer writes the story....they start with some known facts..........and untill the cops release the facts about him, and we may never know........why

I am so glad, wobbles, that your daughter is doing better. As a caring parent, I know you are keeping an eye on her moods, etc...
The journalism, yes, I agree, they go on few facts. As I have been reading more about this and listening to news reports here in Mn, this child had a rough life. Which does NOT make it anywhere's near ok for what he did. No excusing it.
I honestly don't think they'll ever have a reason for why he did it.

I could go on a rant, rave thing on what I think is going on with our kids now, but am waiting to hear from others.

Joseph Stalin stated that "One death is a tragedy. A million deaths is a statistic." The more we see the less we're affected. And we see a lot, both on the real news and as entertainment. Tends to dull the senses, and the sense, unless it's close to home. Which it is for me right now.

Up through the Korean War, military training used bullseye targets for shooting instruction and practice, and the majority of GI's, in their first brush with real combat, froze up and couldn't shoot at real people. Uncle Sam figured out that training with realistic targets shaped like human beings helped dull the sense of wrongness in really shooting at people, changed all targets to human shapes, and first-combat-freezing mostly disappeared. That's fact. I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to what the increased exposure to realistic violence does to kids, particularly those already not too well balanced.

I'm no expert, but for what little it's worth, I suspect that the drugs supress the emotional symptoms without dealing with the root causes of the depression, which masks rather than curing. In some extreme cases, the bottled up emotions erupt, sometimes spectacularly.

    I think you've got it there G.T.

Sublimation is one thing, repression quite another

Psychiatrists, or in many cases family practitioners, that prescribe psychotropic medications to their patients -- especially children -- generally suggest the patient receive therapy along with the medication as part of an integrated solution. The medications are used to treat neural chemical imbalances, while the therapy is used to get to the mental root of the depression, anxiety, etc. and to teach the patient to deal with it when they are faced with it again.

Chronic depression and anxiety can be socially crippling, with some patients unable to even respond to therapy constructively without the aid of medications. While I agree that most patients don't need to rely solely on medication, and certainly not for the rest of their life, these medications are a valuable tool to help one deal with these sorts of problems.

Taking medications for mental or emotional problems with proven biochemical ties is not repression. This social stigma is one of the reasons many patients never seek help to begin with.

I have no argument with you there, in the right circumstances medication per se can be a boon. Personally I believe that those who generate that social stigma are ignorant fools.

However my issue is with coerced medication, Flouride anyone?
