what specifically are you wanting to capture?

if its a still image, pressing the prt scr button on your keyboard will (usually) save a snapshot to your clipboard which you can then paste into whatever paint program you like to use.

otherwise for a little bit more control this is pretty good

Or, if you are looking to record screen activity as a movie then you could give wink a try.

I've been mucking about with this recently and found it to be pretty good at doing stills and movies.

It only saves as Flash Video .FLV though

You are about a week late. Snagit was offered free on around June 6th. I downloaded a copy (7.2.5) and was emailed a key.
As far as a freebie, I use PrintKey2000 to grab a screen shot or a rectangular region of a website or desktop. http://printkey2000.software.informer.com/

Another freeware alternative is Snapper, which takes screen shots and saves them as jpg files to your chosen path, with a filename prefix of your choosing. With sequential mouse clicks one can take, say, screen shots of each screen seen during a software install. Snapper is a single EXE file (save it to your path) and is simplicity itself, and loads/unloads very easily.
    Download at http://www.ovosoft.net/snapper

You have a key on your keyboard labeled print screen. It captures/copies the screen image to the clipboard and you can paste into whatever.
    Free!

from TechSmith the makers of SnagIt - also video.

For more video options check out http://camstudio.org/ they started a whole line, they sold the program to Robohelp, who sold to Adobe (CamStudio was originally released by a company called RenderSoft who were subsequently bought by a company called eHelp who used some of the technology in their program, RoboDemo ...

Some time later, eHelp was bought by Macromedia who wanted RoboDemo (which was to become Captivate) )
And someone else mentioned Wink - good for making demos.

FS capture is really good, do you need any more?
