When I close the lid on my laptop the screen does not shut off. In the advanced tab in the power option properties, I do not have the option to shut off the screen when I close the lid. The only option I have is to Do Nothing. Is there anything thing I can do? I am using Windows XP Professional.

    Thank You,

On the Power Schemes Tab, you have the scheme set to Laptop/Portable, right?

Also some laptops simply don't have this feature (go figure - often Packard Bells)

Finally, is your laptop ACPI compliant? You can check your settings for this in the BIOS, or in Device Manager does it list your motherboard as ACPI compliant? If it isn't compliant, then sorry, you are SOL.

Yes the Power Scheme is on Laptop/Portable. This computer used to have the option but since I put in a new hard drive it doesnt. The laptop is ACPI compliant.

Do you have terminal services enabled? Power options are not available if you do.

Click Start> Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs> Add/Remove Windows Components to start the Windows Components Wizard. In the Components list, Terminal Services would be checked if enabled.

What make/model is the laptop and the new HD?

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000 and the hard drive is a 60 GB 5400 rpm Toshiba.

Do the other 2 power button options have the choices available in the drop-down selection?

The drop down box under when I press the power button only has only 3 options, Do Nothing, Ask Me, Shut Down. But Power Schemes drop down box has alot of choices.

You have the latest drivers installed for the new HD? If at all unsure run the update drivers option. You cna find this under Device Manager> Disk drives. Click Update drivers button.

OK..we established the laptop is ACPI compliant, but is it activated.

To determine whether Windows XP Professional is running in ACPI mode

Control Panel> Performance & Maintenance> System. In Properties box click Hardware tab, then Device Manager. In the Details pane click Computer.

If ACPI PC is listed under Computer, the computer is operating in ACPI mode. It sounds like your BIOS is ACPI compatible but Windows was not installed in ACPI mode,in which case you will need to reinstall and ensure that it is installed in this mode.

This may sound like a 'stupid' question:eek:, but did it ever shut off? confused:eek:

Could it be hardware related? I believe those Dells have a little white rod near the where the hinges are that is pushed in when the laptop closes. Is it still there?

Read the full thread...the OP clearly states that it used to have this software option and that it no longer appears in the drop-down menu. A little white rod being present or not in the hardware is not going to make it re-appear. The laptop physically closing is not the issue.

Run # 204 on the right-hand side from the link below and see if you get the option back.

If the above do not solve the problem, you may have a HD issue, mainly that Dell's require a Dell compliant HD in order to allow all functions, so the obvious question would be is the Toshiba HD, Dell compatable. Make certain you check the full model#, as I have seen HD's with the same base Model# not work in Dell's.............A long shot I know, but I have seen it happen before with Dell's, if in doubt check with Dell, if you haven't already. Hope that helps

I did read the whole thread. No where does he say that it's a just software issue. It could also be firmware related as well.

And yes, if there is issues with that piece, it could affect it. I have a Dell like his, I have worked on these Dells, and I know from experience. :p

I was just trying to eliminate any small overlooked possibilities. In my experience, a lot of times the issue is caused by the littlest overlooked problem.

No where did I state this. rolleyes

I checked to make sure all the drivers were updated and they were. But I noticed my Video Controller (VGA Compatible) is listed under other devices and it will not let me install this hardware. ACPI Uniprocessor PC is listed under Computer. I ran #204 from the link and I still do not have the option. The hard drive should be Dell compliant because I purchased the hard drive directly from Dell stating what computer I had and everything.

    Thank You,

I figured out the problem. I must have missed installing the driver for my Display Adapter. Once I installed the driver ATI Mobility Radeon X300 I have the option for Stand By when I shut the lid. Thank For everyones help.
