I have an HP pavilion mx704 CRT monitor that is constantly flickering when the settings are at 85 hertz with 1024 x 768 resolution. I know that my computer does not flicker at these settings as they have not been changed since I got the computer. However, I did have an Gigabyte GeForce 5500 AGP128MB DDR video card that was on this pc, but was removed about a week ago, could this be the cause of the flickering? Could an Nvidia driver be interfering with my onbaord video settings somehow?

Could be a driver issue. Certainly wouldn't hurt to uninstall and remove any existing Nvidia drivers and update your onboard drivers. You can try turning your Refresh rate down too. Normally the higher the better but try 75Hz and see if that fixes it. Also I don't know if RAM is your issue but I've seen bad memory modules cause the screen to flicker. That was with an onboard card too and we just ended up installing a video card and all was well. Could have just been a coincidence though.

I have gone and booted into safe mode and used Drive Cleaner to remove any NVIDIA remnants. I have updated my onboard video drivers. I could not find any driver updates for my monitor. Yet at any refresh rate past 60 I get screen flicker. Could it be that the video card actually set the refresh rate at a higher rate and when I took it off kept it at an unsopported 85hz? (If video cards can even do that) Or could it be some other factor?

Could just be a bad monitor too. HP CRTs used to drive me crazy.

In the monitor tab of advanced display properties, what is the monitor type set to? Is it 'Default' or is it something else. You can try switching to another one or you can even try finding and installing a monitor 'driver' from HPs site.

Also are there any OCD settings physically on the monitor that you can change?
