My PC screen freezes but sounds continue to play in the background. I've read it could be the memory I've done tests through memtest and it all checks out. I did a virus scan in safe mode nothing found, updated drivers, CCcleaner, and Spybot no change. I've even bought the Registryeasy and it even had no effect and think its pretty useless IMO. I've uninstalled mcafee and reinstalled when I was told it could be firewall problems. Is there a way to test the hardrive? Any other suggestions? Please help.
I opened a yahoo question up but no words of wisdom yet.

The motherboard, Video Card, CPU, and OCZ memory are all new. I'm not trying to run an old PC here its pretty decent.

    Hi

What tasks or applications are you running when the screen freezes?

In safe mode does the same thing happen?

What startup applications do you have as this sort of sounds as if another application, maybe a security scanner is causing this, can find the list in CCleaners > Tools > Startup menu. Could disable all and test your PC out, then enable one at a time until this issue happens and that app will be the likely culprit.

Any hardware items have a yellow ! mark in device manager?

Hi LoKi, welcome to the forum

RegistryEasy? In my opinion, that's as bad as malware and a scam :(

Can you tell us more about the train of events as you startup the PC?

Right now I'm loosing my mind. I had to turn off the power to reboot. Mcafee didn't stay downloaded went back to their site to redownload and its saying I can't access the internet now. Clearly thats not the case.

I've also had a problem with my Netgear adapter when I turn on my PC. It only started since I just recently moved here at my new place. I get this message

and for some reason can only get online going through windows XP. I keep procrastinating on finding out how to fix that :D

the screen freezes when I do anything from watching videos on Hulu, typing here, watching a movie, or playing a game online. Its random times during random events.

    Hi

Cheers for new info, this helps alot as its generally difficult to diagnose these types of issues without being infront of PC, but slowly we can trace the culprit *I hope*

So the problem more arrises when doing a task that needs the internet? or can it be anything, like using Outlook Express, MS Word etc

Your startup list doesnt show anything untoward in it, but I would still and using msconfig disable all startups and reboot, then see if same happens, if not then one of your startup items is causing this.

as for testing the hard drive, then yes http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/315265 or if you know the maker of your hard drive then many have HDD checking tools, do read the instructions as some of them "may" as part of a check wipe your HDD, but the windows one linked to is ok.

With the randomness of this I would and I know you have already scanned for malware, would run through our guide here and then start a new thread in the malware forum and see what the malware removal experts think and if your deemed malware free we can continue with looking for the cause, do bare in mind that the malware forum is very busy and the timescale to get to your post maybe 48hrs or so, get all the logs attached in one go and dont bump your thread.
