Hey, whenever I plug either my Samsung Syncmaster P2270HD or my Samsung Syncmaster 2333sw into my laptop, both screens go black. Nothing shows on the external monitor and the laptop monitor goes black. I've tried Windows button + p, but that didn't work. I've updated my graphics drivers, but that didn't work either. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

For my laptops/netbooks to toggle display between laptop, monitor or neither I need to press the Function and the F5 key.
The Function + F6 key turns the backlight off.

Check what the functions keys do on your laptop. Since you never mentioned the brand and model of laptop nor the version of Windows you are running, I could not be more specific.

Sorry I wasn't more specific. I'm on a late 2011 Macbook Pro running 64-bit Windows 7. I made it so that the F1 to F12 keys work as if I was on Windows (I am, but you get the point), yet when I connect the screen and press fn + F5 or fn + F6 nothing happens.

I thought it was a problem with the DVI cable at first so I bought a new one. The DVI cable is connected with a DVI to mini display port converter that then goes into the computer. Could it be an issue with the MDP converter?

Sorry, I haven't used an Apple product since 1989 so I'm out of my league here.

I'm not sure that has anything to do with my problem as I'm running Windows 7 and besides, I've had it work once, but now it doesn't.

And I don't think this has anything to do with Windows 7 because this is a hardware function! Not Windows.

You need to look at your manual. All notebooks that support external monitors (which I believe is all notebooks) allow you to run with just the notebook monitor, just the external monitor, or both. You need to determine exactly which key combination your notebook requires to cycle through those options.

Once you have determined the correct key combo, if it still does not work, then it would seem your problem is with your hardware (since you have tried two monitors) and not the OS.

Since most of the members here deal with hardware built for Windows based systems, and this is an Apple hardware problem, you might get faster help posting on an Apple oriented site.

Are you sure the display port is a mini DVI?
    I found this
At a glance, they look the same.
