Screen of Death and other issues

No problems whatsoever until today - All of a sudden, Winfixer was being installed on my system and pop-ups were launching left and right (all Internet Explorer and as I use Firefox, I knew there was a problem)

I have been attempting to get through every step of the directions on this forum with pretty poor results

    1. Via Add/Remove programs, tried to remove SearchAssistant and failed
    2. Ran CC cleaner
    3. Set file types to show hidden files, etc
    4. Got the GetKey and ShowNew files to run and a log was generated
    5. Downloaded Spybot and every time it found things to fix, it said there were files it could not delete and upon restart, blue screen of death showing a physical memory dump or something (it did show Schmitfraud, Virtumonde and Winfixer but could not entirely remove)
    6. Counterspy did not work so I uninstalled and downloaded AVG software
    7. AVG will not move past a malware found screen that shows a dlcore file and when I tell it to clean and quarantine it, it just goes in a loop and never goes away
    8. Tried to run Bitdefender and crashed

I detail this to show that I truly went through the steps and had issues at each step - I am ready to pull my hair out - I don't know what to attach - Hijack This log, runkeys.txt so I apologize in advance if I am doing this incorrectly. I appreciate any assistance and direction you can give.

    Thank you.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You have a lot of malware problems! To try and make our manual cleaning steps a little shorter I'm going to give you a procedure to run below using a program named ComboFix. But before that, I first want you to uninstall some things.

    Uninstall the below:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    Search Assist
Sunbelt CounterSpy <-- we are finished trying to use it

During our next procedures (actually in my next fixes that will be posted in a later message) we are going to windup breaking Google Desktop. It may be a good idea for you to just uninstall it now. And then when we finish your malware removal, you can reinstall it.

    Now on to ComboFix

    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log ( C:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
    4. the ComboFix log
This is only a start! We have more to do but the above will simplify our next steps.

Looks like you forgot to install the Sun Java update I gave to you to install. You need to install it.

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.
    C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\megerihoz22011.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\vfbqqarA.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\g4356cbvy63.exe

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {62BC0272-56FF-469B-9E77-1F82754B7F9E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfg.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [megerihoz] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\megerihoz22011.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vfbqqarA] C:\WINDOWS\vfbqqarA.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [g4356cbvy63] C:\WINDOWS\g4356cbvy63
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinCore32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinCore32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SBRegRebootCleaner] C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy\SBRC.exe
    O16 - DPF: {DBA230D1-8467-4e69-987E-5FAE815A3B45} -

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Shutdown AVG Antispyware and your antivirus programs before doing the below.

Run HijackThis(select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

Followed those steps but as soon as I got the hijack log, another pop-up came up about Win Anti-virus or something similar - and a bunch of error pop-ups that a plugin failed to initialize

    Here's the HJT log

What program were the popups from? And did it tell you where it was being detected? Perhaps just in System Volume Information which is System Restore and we have not disable it yet? What error popups? You must give exact detail information and error messages.

What do you mean under "Program"? Do mean using the Start button and All Programs you see it listed? If so, just right click on it and select Delete.

  12. wendyod10

    wendyod10 Private E-2

This is the message of the pop-up:

"NOTICE: You have not completed viruses and spyware scan. If your computer has viruses, spyware and adware, it can cause your private and billing information leaks, unpredictable or erratic system behavior, freezes, crash or permanent damage to your PC. WinAntiVirus PRO can perform a quick and completely FREE scan of your system for viral and spyware infections. Would you like WinAntiVirus PRO to scan for and, if found, remove any malicious software (Recommended)

    OK CANCEL

I did right-click on the Outer Info (yes, from Start, All Programs) and that did it - thank you

Okay ComboFix remove a couple more residual problems. However a few remain.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Do you know how to use the command prompt to copy file?
Do you have a bootable copy of your Windows XP CD? We may need to boot to the recovery console to make some fixes. But let's try the below first.

Download and run the below patch from Microsoft. Follow the directions on the download page.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8e-4735-4934-a66e-5b957986efbf&displaylang=en

Please use the link I gave you for ComboFix and redownload it to make sure you have the current version and use it to do the below.

Run ComboFix again and attach a new log.

    Are you still having problems?

    Ran the Microsoft security patch

Did the Fixme.reg and merged it

    Re-ran Combofix - log attached

I might be able to do some command prompt stuff with a lot of handholding ;)

Things are still the same - in fact, when i opened Firefox, it asked me (yet again) if I wanted it to be the default browser because it wasn't (which shouldn't be)

    anyhow..

Okay it looks like those fixed the remaining items I had seen.

Exactly what do you mean is the same. Are you still getting WinAntivirus popups? FireFox asking to be your default browser is not malware. It is just a option that you have not set in FireFox. Goto Tools, Options in FireFox and uncheck the box under System Defaults that says Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup.

I have not gotten those pop-ups again but (and this is going to sound weird, I admit) when the computer was first infected, several files on my desktop were highlighted (almost like you would select them, Ctrl+A) and every time I have rebooted, they remain highlighted - I would say out of 35 files on my desktop, a good 25 of them are highlighted - that has not gone away - what it means? I have no idea -

Based on the logs and scans, do you think my system is clean at this point?

I'll give you three things to look at.
    1. Right click on your Desktop and select Properties. Then click the Desktop tab and then the Customize Desktop button. Now in the next window that comes up click the Web tab. Make sure at the bottom that Lock desktop items is unchecked. Then in the Web pages: box delete all items but My Current Home Page and make sure it is unchecked too. Then click OK. Apply. OK.
    2. Click Start > Control Panel > System. Click the Advanced Tab, then under the Performance section click the Settings button. On the next Window/tab title Visual Effects, Try changing the "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" option. If checked, uncheck it.
    3. If that does not help use the same procedure as in step 2 but on the Visual Effects tab select the button at the top that says Adjust for best appearance
    Any change?

Based on your logs yes. So let's move on to the final steps.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

  21. wendyod10

    wendyod10 Private E-2

Did the steps - the items on the desktop are still highlighted

Also, all of a sudden, my wireless connection keeps dropping and here is the error message I am getting:

"A potential problem with the 802.1x supplicant was detected. The current connection has been broken.

--Reboot or logoff. If problem persists, contact your Network Administrator
Follow these recommended steps to resolve the issue."

Could be nothing - could be something - I am just suspicious of everything at this point - arrrgh.

When I manually open the Intel Proset /Wireless - the connection is there but I have to keep clicking on 'connect' - it apparently keeps dropping me

Try describing it or posting a snapshot in more detail and put into a new message in the Software Forum.

You should post about this in the Networking Forum. Also you may want to read some of the below for your own education.
