    Hmm,

Alright. Can I get you to do these steps please:

    • Left-Click onto Start
    • Right-Click onto My Computer

    • Left-Click onto Properties
In the General Field in the System Properties Window, there's going to be some information. Can you type me off what it says under "System" and "Computer"?

    Thanks,

    Hello,

    Yeah. That does help alot.
So it seems your running Windows XP Sp 3.

The 448 MB of Ram, is possibly the reason why your computer is running slow. Typically anything under 1 GB or 1028 MB of Ram, is relatively slow. But we'll try and do a few steps to see if we can make it faster.

The next few suggestions may take a while, but are necessary
Also, have you ran Disk Cleanup, and or Disk Defragmenter recently?

If not. I would like you to do these please, in order if possible.
    They are located under:
    • Start
    • All Programs
    • Accessories
    • System Tools
And both of them should be there. If Disk Cleanup asks you for a drive, select C:, and if when running Disk Defragmenter, Select C: and click Defragment.

Please run these, and let me know.

    Try this instead.

    Same instructions as below.

    Go start, and then run
And type this in for Disk Cleanup
    %SystemRoot%\System32\cleanmgr.exe
    and press Ok

    and for Disk Defragementer
    %SystemRoot%\System32\dfrg.exe
    And press Ok.

Let me know when these are done and run'd.

    Thanks,

    Alright.

Does it seem to be any quicker? Also, have you made any Hardware changes or software changes before this happened?

having a nightmare trying to run it

    no quicker

severe probs at start of year - friend came around and lost a lot of hardware i think, which is why i think accessories etc....is empty ?

    is it serious ?

  12. Elder_Usr

    Elder_Usr Sergeant

Hmm. Just let it run through its course. And once its done. Select all the boxes, and then press "Ok"

Also, just to understand at the start of year, you had some problems and lost alot of Software. Maybe what I would suggest is a re-install of your PC, that way you'll have a fresh block to start with. Because it seems odd that it is missing some files, especially important system ones.

From there, do you know what starts up when your PC does?
Such as what icons are down by your clock?

ok, have been away for a couple of days

have downloaded a disk defragmenter and ran that

still getting freezing and non-functional mouse - could it be the mouse ?

also, worried at lost hardware from months ago - is this a problem

icons at bottom, near clock are :

    messenger
    sync manager
    talk talk
    control centre 2
    avast
    safely remove hardware

Hmm its plausible Carl, that it could be your mouse, but rarely it should/would do that, do you have a spare mouse around your place to try and see if it that. Wouldn't really want you to go and spend $$ for a replacement, just to realize it isn't even that to begin with. :)

Other than that. Seems very weird, i'll look further into this. I just had a really eventful weekend, and I'll pick it back up first thing tommorow.

    Thanks.

    thanks

i will take a mouse home from work tonight and try that

however, things have worsened (i've just put a thread onto malaware support board) about a virus i seemed to have picked up

i'm now not sure what i need to do next

    thanks again
