Screensaver can't be shut off

My daughter's computer crashes every 10 to 15 minutes. It crashes even when it's idle. I tried to turn her screensaver off by going into Control Panel > Display > Screensaver but, as soon as I clicked on the Screensaver tab, I received these 2 messages:

Her computer is a Compaq Presario and runs Windows XP Home. I don't know too much more about it.

Her computer really is a mess. She has programs installed that don't work, such as Paint.exe. It needs to be formatted but I'd like to try to get some of these things fixed until it can be done.

Is there another way to turn off Screensaver?

To check/repair Windows files, - will help
    Start , run, type in
    sfc /scannow
and put the XP disc in the cd rom, and keep clicking retry, until it completes -
Sometimes any XP cd will do the repair - you could try your own, if you have not got the original.

Hi baklogic . . . thanks for the link. It's an all-in-one pc Swiss Army knife, lol.

My Windows 2000XP Pro disk is old . . . it doesn't have SP2 on it. When I tried to use it on my old pc to do an sfc scan, it asked me to put the SP2 disk in the CD ROM drive. I didn't have an SP2 disk so I led it to where SP2 was installed on my pc, but it wouldn't accept it. I then made an SP2 disk and tried that but it wouldn't accept it either.

I can give it a shot tho.

Could my XP Pro disk harm/change her XP Home os in any way, would it require additional software because of it, etc?

If you just type in sfc /scannow, and click o.k, THEN put your xp pro disc in , it will not install anything, just look for the files.
If it does not do them all, it might do some .
The other option is to direct the computer to brouse its own Windows i386 files, but they could be corrupted - but either way, you should be able to fix some, if not all files.

I ran an sfc scan. It didn't ask me for the disk but I popped in it after the sfc /scannow command. It ran and, when it was finished, it shut off. It didn't give a message or report.

I also did a clean boot (see how much you guys taught me in posts for my pc?).

I also changed the time and date in a Time and Date command, even though the time wasn't exact because I couldn't get it down to the exact second, and I reentered the date.

I was also able to disable the screensaver.

So far, it's running better. I've been on the internet for about 1/2 hour and it hasn't crashed yet, which is about 200% better than it was. Hopefully, the sfc scan corrected some things. She's had this computer for over 4 years and she hasn't updated its drivers. I'm going to attempt it when I get my pc out of the shop so that I'll have it for a backup in case I have an uh-oh.

    Thanks baklogic :)

It seems like the fixes that were made helped the computer a lot. Last night, I was on it for about 2 hours and it didn't crash once. Sometimes it froze up at start up though, when I was trying to get Avast updated but couldn't because it kept saying that the date and time were incorrect even though they were correct. I got that problem solved also. It's been on for about 3 hours today already without crashing. I couldn't fix her computer before I built mine and y'all helped me out and taught me a lot, so that the things I had to do were familiar to me.

I really can't thank you guys enough.
