Big confusing question. My friend bough this SCSI Drive. He though it was a SATA and he was going to sell it to me, but then I looked at it and was like, that is not a sata. And he was like "really." So we figured out it was a 80pin Drive. It only cost him 25 bucks. I have no idea how much gigs it has cause it doesn't say. I searched the serial number, "ST150176LC." And I am confuse. I got two different things on it but I never dealt with these kinda drives. So if anyone knows about SCSI drives plz answer my questions. How do I make it work? What kinda controller card do I need for this thing? Or do I send it back and don't bother with the stupid thing? Thankyou in advance for your post.

LW and LC drives do not have internal terminators or
any other way of adding internal terminators to the
drive; use external active termination if required.
Use active (ANSI SCSI-2 Alternative 2) terminators
when terminating the bus. Use active negation
terminators when terminating a SCSI Ultra2 bus
operating in Low Voltage Differential (LVD) mode.

You have to use a controller that uses the 80pin SCSI cable. The above note from the site post mentions this.

This Chick is still confuse. Is there a way you could just tell me What I need to buy to make this thing work? That would be helpful, Thanks..Sorry for being so dumb..

I mentioned in the second post four posts below this. You will need to get a SCSI card that supports 80 pin drives (SCSI comes in 50, 68, 80 pin flavors), and that would mean the card would cost more then what you have invested into the drive.

OH ok. I got it now. After page and page of information. I feel stupid, lol. Thanks for your post. Now I gotta send this drive back. My friend is stupid to, lol..

First, there is NO SUCH THING as an 80-pin controller.

Second, that drive is considerably slower than any current generation 40 or 80GB PATA/SATA drive and it is oversized to boot. With the "after rebate" prices of ATA/IDE drives so low, it makes little sense to mess with SCSI unless you already have the appropriate host adapter (controller to the uwashed) and cable with terminator (as another wrote, that drive doesn't have internal termination) in your parts kit.

Third: That drive is an SCA drive which is designed to be used in hot-swap drive cages or with backplanes in server cases. If you really want to use that drive, you will also need an 80 to 68-pin adapter for SE (single ended) drives, which adapts the drive to the standard 68-pin cable and drive power connectors. I get my SCA adapters off eBay as they are cheapest there.

Here is a site with lots of good SCSI info and links: http://www.scsifaq.org .

But if you really want to use it, I happen to have a VERY NICE Tekram DC390-U2W SCSI host adapter with cable and terminator and an appropriate 80 to 68 adapter that I could throw in at no extra charge. Along with original manuals, driver disks and box. LMK.

Uh Zepper, there is a such thing as a 80pin ScSi, but the cards are expensive for them. SCSI comes in 50, 68, and 80 pin flavors.

Let me add to my previous post zepper, yes 80 pin is for hotswap drives, but with the 68 to 80 pin adapter cable, if the OP had kept this drive, it could of be made workable, but the fact is the card, the cable and the cost of the drive adds up to what a SATA drive would cost for aprx the same drive space.

Link me to an 80-pin host adapter - I dare you. I've had SCSI on my own machine for 5 or 6 years and have been rangling PCs for over 25 years and I don't recall ever having seen one.

That's not something the average person could normally go out and buy - it's OEM for HP/Compaq. Besides which it is a stupid idea as SCA connectors are meant for hard mounting and are almost useless for cable connections. Plus, you then have to do custom drive cages and backplanes - only something an oversized-overpriced outfit like HP would do to lock customers into their overpriced peripherals.
. But congratulations on finding it - hope you didn't have to stay up all night to do it. OTOH...

You threw out a challenge, with no stipulations. I met your challenge accordingly. You still act tough.

I'm sorry, but this is just a poorly executed troll attempt on your part.

As a site owner, I have to step in due to constant complaint about your posts being 65% accurate at best and then you being confrontational when called out. Please check your attitude at the door, there is only room for one attitude here and your talking to him.
