Ok this is my first post Guys and Gals ....

I am a photographer and until now I have had no problems getting my photos off the card directly to my computer...

I have 2 cards One being a sd 512 which I can access the photos on the cam but when I take the card out to load onto the HD it says it needs to be formatted.... never had to before ... My 8 gig card is a SDHC which is doing the same thing. Now I think my computer is to old to read that type of card ??? I'm running XP home. But my gf's Laptop is less then 2 yrs old and is running vista and it wont read either card as well.... Any thoughts would be great as the files on the cards are important.....

    Thanks to all in advance

    GMAN

Since this is happening on 2 different computers with 2 different cards the only common denominator is the camera.

Have you been able to download pics off this camera before?
Have you used these particular cards before with this camera and computer?

Funny thing is I forgot to mention Two diff Cams one still and one vid. The vid had the 8gig which was my first time using (brothers cam) I just yanked the card brought it home and tried to download vids.

The other card is out of my GF's still cam which yes we have been able to trasfer without any probs until now...

Now I tried to recover the files using PC Inspector file recovery before I attempted to format that 8GIG card and nothing... Now get this ... I went to format it and guess what ... it cant be formatted... I'm stumped I gave it to a Senior Prorammer friend who happens to be in the vids... I will let you all know what he finds out ....

Okay everybody, I have a PNY Optima SDHC 8GB card.

The problem is not with the card OR the camera. the problem is with the fact that the card is High Capacity. Search the microsoft website for "SDHC" and you'll find that there is a hotfix for the problem.

I also have this problem, I downloaded EVERY upgrade that was available to make sure that I had it right. And the card is suppose to work aftere you install the upgrade. The problem I encountered was that I am running SP3 on XP Professional, and the upgrade will not install because the hotfix mentioned above was suppose to be shipped with SP3. But if you already have SP3 installed, the hotfix will not work.

So, somebody else go download and try to install the hotfix (authentic windows only) and let me know if it works for you.

the link to the hotfix is here... browse thru the site, these are not the only fixes for this problem on Microsoft's Site:

    for Windows Vista: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936825
    for Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944345

Yeah even after trying but failing with the software that came with the cam I found it to be my computer having been upgraded to sp3 that the sdhc card was not supported and subsequintly some how I lost all files on the card by trying to read it and recover it bla bla bla. I couldnt even format the card on my computer. I reinstalled the card in the camera and it coudnt read it either. But the camera was able to format the card so we'll see what happens.

i know its not a fix but my linux reads the card perfectly, it adds it as another drive

i tried formating it in linux but windows is still not interested

    just an option/thought

A FIX FOR THE SDHC CARD (hardware)

THIS IS THE SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM for me

(opinion) I think that the manufacturer of the card should let you know that the HC cards will not always read in a normal drive. However, I have found an inexpensive fix to the problem. I went to Radio Shack yesterday and asked the guy about the HC cards, and he had a $25 cable for my camera that would tie it all together. But that cable would only have allowed me to connect THAT camera to the PC.

There was another piece of hardware that works. Guys and Gals THIS IS THE SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM (for me - and hopefully for you). Radio Shack (for sure, and maybe other places) has the:

Targus Universal 32 in 1 Memory Card Reader/Writer with High-Speed USB 2.0 Data Transfer - COST: around $10 (mine was 9.99)

Read and write data - Powers via USB port - no additional driver installation required for Windows ME, 2000, XP, Vista and Mac OSX v10.1.2 plus - Package includes: Card reader, USB extension cable.

Here is the link to the manufacturers website so you can look at it:
    http://www.targusdigital.com/products.asp?product_id=100015&dept_id=100015&parent_id=

I know this isn't the best solution, but it's cheap, and it works, and the transfer rate is FAST. I would recommend this for anyone (expecially photographers) who may use different types of cards. It conects a lot of types.

I hope you guys can find it.

Re: A FIX FOR THE SDHC CARD (hardware)

Agreed blondeboy ... I had the same problem with a Fujifilm FinePIX ... bought an Apacer external card reader, ensuring that it supported SDHC and it works great ... powered by USB and Bluetacked to the side of my tower :) extremely satisfied with it :)
