Dear Person: 1st up , I'm a newbie...What I want to do is check out my memory cards...I currently have 3 cards @ 256MB each..When I go to "My Computer" & click on properties it shows 544MB instead of the expected 768MB...I went online & found a program called memtest86...It is a GZ file...Adobe won't open it...I then found a file called wrar380...I have absolutely no clue as to how I can open & run memtest86 with wrar380...I am totally confused about archiveing & extraction , etc...All I want to do is run a simple test...Period...If someone can give me detailed info that will bring up a screen that says "RUN PROGRAM" or something similar , I would really appreciate it...My computer is a Dell Optiplex GC1 with WinXP Pro SP 2...In advance , Thank you VERY much.....:banghead

gz is a tarball file. Download the program here instead. Once you have the file, you need to burn it as an image to a CD. By telling you burning program to "burn as an image" the iso will be converted the way it has to be to become bootable.

Then, all you need to do is keep the CD in the tray, reboot your computer, and it will run the memtest.

Does RealPlayer have a "burn an iso as an image" option?

Mimsy; If it does I don't know where to find/use it....

That's why you're not able to use Memtest properly. Download CDburnerXP instead, and use that function in the File menu to burn the disk.

    1. The file you downloaded is a zip file. You need to use winrar to unzip it before you attempt to burn it to a CD.
    2. Once it is unzipped/unrared, you should see name_of_file.iso , if you don't then attempt to unzip or unrar it again using a different unzipper.
    3. Start up CDBurner XP Pro and tell it to burn name_of_file.iso
    4. After it is burned, keep the CD in the drive and reboot the computer. The memory test should run.

The fact that you only see 544MB instead of the 768MB installed might be due to the fact that your onboard memory cheap shares RAM with the computer. The missing memory might be used by the video chip and not a bad RAM stick.

No, it was the offer to give me your first born. I hate kids. :major

I assumed you had the files unzipped, my mistake. Plodr has given you good instructions on how to deal with that part... in addition to what he already posted: If you do not unzip the files, burning the iso as an image will not work. You have to unzip them first. 7-zip can help you unzip them.

    1st.. Mimsy:
    roflmao..roflmao........
Here's where one of my problems is...I downloaded 7-zip from here...I installed it..I went to open the memtest file on my desktop , found 7-zip & clicked on open with 7-zip...What happened next nearly took my socks off...A black box about 3/4 of my screen size came up & then instantly vanished...That's it...Gone..How do I know if this file is unzipped ??

2nd..Plodr:...First...Thank you for your reply..I've tried wrar & there's NO instructions for this dummy to follow...It got SO confusing that I removed the program..I will try winrar if 7-zip gives me a problem..

I have only 1 CD-RW left & my SS check doesn't arrive for another week..Then I will get some more...So I need to get it right this time..

Makes a whole lotta sense to me...But shouldn't 768MB show up in the screenshot below ??? You said: "memory cheap shares RAM <<--- Do you mean memory "chip" ??....Or you a Latino ??....Absolutely NO offense intended..

Where do I see it at ??....Does another icon appear ??

Where it says "name_of_file.iso" do I type in Memtest86 etc or will it magically appear ??

As you can see I'm not very bright when it comes to these kind of programs..Please give me some time & info & I will learn them...Thank you VERY much for your help & patience...Later....RM2007...:wave

Mimsy & plodr:...STOP THE PRESSES!!...Made some progress!!... I figured out how to extract memtest to ISO..And am the PROUD owner of a new desktop icon with iso in it's file info...I also got the file to record as an iso image to CD-RW..AND I got a notification that the file was recorded successfully...BUT when I rebooted I got NOTHING!! :cry ..What exactly am I supposed to see when this test is going on ??....FYI... When I go to "my computer" & open up CD drive "D" , shows nothing on the CD...What's next??...Later folks.....rolleyes

Go into the BIOS of your computer, usually to get there on a Dell it is press the F2 key when the computer starts. If you were correct, you'll see a screen with printing, tabs and your mouse won't work. That's the BIOS. Look for any tab that says Boot. You have to use your keyboard to move around. Use the tab or ---> key to get to the Boot tab. It might show you the order of the boot devices. You want the CD drive to be first. You may need to highlight it and press the up arrow to move it up a notch. Each BIOS is a bit different so you might need to experiment until you get the CD drive up in the first position. After it is there, press F10 (this is the standard key for exiting the BIOS and saving the changes). If you get scared, just press the escape key and select exit don't make any changes.

Reboot and your computer should run the memtest.

LOL yup cheap meant chip. No I'm not Latino - PA Dutch & Hungarian (and PA Dutch is actually PA German rather than Dutch).

That you see nothing on the CD is a bit unusual, you should be able to see some sort of files on it. Did you burn the CD at 8x or 4x speed, or any other number-x?

When you start CDBurnerXP it will ask you if you want to burn a data CD of Audio CD. Tell it data.

In the starting window, you will see four sections. The top two work like the folders in windows, if you click on C:\ in the left section you will see its contents in the right one. Above them you have menus... File, Edit Recorder, et cetera.

Under File you have an option called "Burn disc from ISO file..." Click on that one.

Now you have a new window in front of you. Click on the button with "..." near the top and select the iso file you extracted to your desktop. In the drop-down menu underneath Burning speed, select a low number, and then click on Burn disc.

These steps will give you a bootable memtest86 CD.

Before you try to boot the computer from the memtest CD, make sure you have looked in your BIOS and told the computer to use the CD drive as the first boot option. Also, keep in mind that memtest86 will test all your memory sticks as a single unit, so if you see errors in the test, the program will not be able to tell you which of the sticks that caused them. And easy way around that is to test one stick at a time.

1st..plodr...I checked the BIOS...Under "Boot Sequence" , CD-ROM starts first...It was never changed...Thank you for that tip....

    2nd..Mimsy...
..On the front of my burner it says:..12x10x32x...I have no clue as to what speed it's copying at...or even if I have a choice..

There are 2 screenshots below..#1 is the first one you told me about...When I click on "Copy disc" , it expands & I then click on data...Then I get screenshot #2 immediatly...

    This is what I don't get......I can not find a "C:\ anywhere...

    So I'm stuck again...:banghead

    Talk to ya later...Best regards......:)

Ah, you want to pick door number 3! Look at the third option, Burn ISO - that's the winner!

(I don't use CDBurner XP so I had no idea what you were looking at). A picture tells the story.

Sorry RM2007, I haven't used that program. I tried to install it once to try it out and it kept shooting up an error message and closing so i could not get it installed. Therefore, I will defer to Mimsy as to what buttons to click. (I use something called ImgBurn to burn all my ISOs).
