Hi there, I'm having trouble removing a browser Hijack (an about:blank search site). I believe it's related to the file se.dll, as this was the only file Kaspersky was unable to remove. Also, after I ran Kaspersky, I get an error when windows starts (something about unable to access se.dll). Anyhow, I googled to find a removal method for the se.dll trojan, and while I did find one, it was very convaluted and kind of dumb. I figured that, since I have Hijackthis!, it'd probably be easier to find someone who knows what they are doing to take a look at my log. Anyway, any help is appreciated.

    Thanks guys,
    Die dulce fruere.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I was using a browser called Smart Explorer, which claimed to be more secure then IE, but now I know it isn't. Just wondering if someone could point me towards the better browser out of Firefox or Opera.

EDIT2: I just realised I was supposed to post the log as an attachment. I can do that, if it's better...

    Hi Taffer,

Your HijackThis is an old version - Please update. Then, please take a spin through the Cleanup Tutorial HERE:

READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan and Virus Removal

There are only a few of us Volunteers who regularly offer advice in this forum. Running through the above Tutorial will remove a lot of stuff that would otherwise clog a HijackThis Log and will save us valuable time.

Please let us know the steps that you are able to complete and the ones that give you problems. Note that you need to be in Safe Mode with System Restore OFF (if you have it) and have the Viewing of Hidden Files ENABLED as per the instructions in the link. Make sure to do the Online Scans.

Post back and let us know how you fared. Also, send us a HijackThis Log. Please be sure to follow the instructions below:

Note that your HijackThis should be up-to-date (v1.99.1) and MUST be extracted to its own safe folder – C:\Program Files\HijackThis ! Should you need a Fresh Download of HJT, get it HERE: HijackThis v1.99.1

Also note that, before you scan, you MUST close all running programs including your web browser, e-mail and items in the system tray.

Please save your HJT Log as a .txt File and attach it via the "Manage Attachments" tool in the Additional Options section when you post.

    Best luck :)
    PP

Never mind, fixed the problem myself. Ran Kaspersky then Adaware then Spyware S&D, then Hijack This! again just to make sure (there will still 2 references left after this cleaning process, which I deleted) all in safe mode. Did the trick. TBH the reason why I didn't do this earlier is because this hijack seemed similar to the last one I had some time ago, which was not fixed by this, and I had to rely on others to look at my Hijack This! log.

    Thanks anyhow.
