Hi There - Seems I got infected when looking at a site connected to the seattle mist football team on 11/12/09. Running Windows XP. I've completed the process of "read & run me first" as well as "Windows XP Cleaning Procedure", and I'm still having problems with pop ups and re-directs. I attempted to clear older AV and Security program remnants out via Windows "Add/Remove Programs" feature in the control panel. The only issues that came up that I thought were problematic to my success were that I couldn't get the "System Defender" AV program unistalled or disabled when I ran ComboFix. Additionally, although I disabled McAfee AV for the scan and remove process, I believe I did not disable McAfee firewall during the ComboFix process, and the entire suite came back on following the reboot ComboFix required prior to generating it's logs and completing it's process. I've attached the logs per your instructions (I hope), and I sincerely appreciate any direction you can give me to clean this up.
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Per the instructions you are only supposed to be attaching the C:\MGlogs.zip file. Not the individual logs. The instructions stated the below in reference to attaching the logs
What are the below seen on your Desktop?
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Emery\Desktop\"
    malwar~1.exe Sep 17 2009 4045528 "malware finder.exe"
    VIRUSA~1 Nov 15 2009 "Virus abatement 111509"

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
IBM 32-bit Runtime Environment for Java 2, v1.4.2

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\IBM\Java142\jre\bin\NPJPI142.dll
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: IBM Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\IBM\Java142\jre\bin\NPJPI142.dll
    O11 - Options group: [JAVA_IBM] Java (IBM)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thank you, Chaslang! I will upload the zip file tomorrow when I'm back home in front of my laptop.

Back in front of the laptop, and thanks again!! The Malware Finder.exe is the executable for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software, and the Virus Abatement 111209 folder is for all of the logs and work I'm doing to get rid of this bug.

I will follow the process as you listed, and will report back the results.

    Thanks very much -

It seems to be working well at first glance. No pop ups in the first 5 minutes, no search redirects. I can't thank you enough. I've attached the logs requeted here. You are a saint!

FYI - after uninstalling messenger and the IBM 32-bit runtime environment for Java 2, v1.4.2, there were no listings to remove from the mgtools analyse scan. Additionally, I got a blue screen the first attempt at combo fix, but got it to work on the second attempt, and I attribute that to the fact that I disabled my Anti-virus and Anti-spyware programs, but not the firewall. After I disabled the Firewall, it ran properly.

I will be back and recommend you to others, although it looks like you've got as much as possible already to keep you busy.

    Best -
    B

You're welcome. Your logs are clean. Just delete the below folder from your Desktop and in the future do not put files for MGtools here or other tools here.
    Code:

    "C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Emery\Desktop\"
    VIRUSA~1 Nov 15 2009 "Virus abatement 111509"

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
