On a Win 7, home premium lappy, last update was in August, this year. Automatics were turned off. No apparent infections or other issues at all. But when I go to windows updates, it will spend hours "Searching, (or is it looking), for Updates", with no end.
I have run the standard Micorsoft Update tool, and I get an end message that Updates were not repaired. I've followed some of the other simpler steps, (Stopping, starting update services), but still same. Rebooted lots of times. I saw one set of instructions to Regserv a long list of DLL files, have not tried that, as the list is really long and I was hoping there may be a faster/easier fix, if that even works.
Else, I do have restore points prior to the last August, going back as far as May, but I wanted to check for other possible solutions first, please!

Turn it on, let it check for updates and walk away!
Win 7 updates have been sluggish for several months. It can take me several hours (I see 0% of 0 kb download for a long time and it isn't doing anything) and this is on an updated Win 7 computer. I just do something else and check every few hours.

Since your computer has to go through 4 months of updates, it can take a day.

One of the updates this past December was to the update client. Maybe that will improve things.
