    I am working through a Malware/ highjack infection. It started with a fake windows clean-up program telling me that I had hardrive failure and other assorted problems. It seems to be called "securepay, inc virus" The fake software runs a scan and tells me that my computer has many infections and then offers XoftSpySE and FrontlineRegCleaner software to fix the problems. After I download and run the software a message pops up that says it can fix some of the problems, but to correct all of them I will have to upgrade to the premium version (for a fee). I quit using that software at that point. Before coming to your site, I ran CCleaner and Spybot search and destroy. After that the fake software is gone and all of my desktop icons are gone. Also, the program listings on the start menu have the word (empty) when I click on them. I can access programs directly from the hardrive, and I am getting re-directed from google searches. I have now completed all of your run and read steps, and the steps listed in the malware removal tab for Windows 7 as far as MB.exe. Those scans (logs attached) came up clean and the re-directs have stopped. Mostly the computer is functioning, but the remaining problems that I have discovered include:

    the start menu programs are still empty
    the desktop icons are all dimmed except the new ones that I have added via this malware removal process.
    Upon bootup, I get a message that "my toshiba has stopped working" and after that, a box pops up saying that the Catylist control center is not working.

    This computer is a pretty much factory default laptop that has been working great up until now.

    Due to some of the warnings that come with some of the malware removal tools that you recommend, I have not continued past the MB.exe

    What do you recommend please?

    Also, should I be concerned about the registry?

    Thank you so much. You are a great resouce

    Please download and save the below to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

    Now run it. Now see if you can find your Programs and how are the icons on the Desktop looking?

    Next:
    Run this: TDSSkiller - How to run

    Now please run MGtools and save it to your root folder. Run the exe. (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Attach the log from running TDSSKiller as well as the whole C:\MGLogs.zip.

    Thank you so much Mr. TimW. We've made a ton of progress and much is back to normal. My start menu programs are still empty, but all the desktop icons seem to be fine. One thing that is happening is that the link to My bleeping computer gets a re-direct to about.blank. I can right click and open in new tab with no problem, but to double click on the link brings me to about.blank.

    Attached are the log files you requested.

    I previously failed to mention that I had run the TDSkiller program yesterday. That log is also included. I hope that this has not created more work for you.

    Thank you,

    You are running both Norton and MSE. Please uninstall one of them!!

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Users\Jerry\AppData\Local\Hgopuwejatazaleb.bin
    C:\Users\Jerry\AppData\Local\Rfaleyiqamab.dat
    C:\ProgramData\26533624
    C:\ProgramData\28696312
    C:\ProgramData\~26533624
    C:\ProgramData\~26533624r
    C:\ProgramData\~28696312
    C:\ProgramData\~28696312r

    Folder::
    C:\ProgramData\fJc06509fPnNe06509

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    I would also suggest you uninstall Uniblue RegistryBooster. Use CCleaner instead!!

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thank you, The computer seems to work ok. The start menu folders are still empy and I just get a flash of about. blank when some google searches are starting, but am not getting re-directed anymore. It appears from the log that I did not turn off the MSE anti malware program. I'm not sure that I know how. I could uninstall it and re-install at a later date.
    There was an error message during the combofix scan. The message said that a registry entry was not being deleted but that it was not needed. (or similar to that) the reference was being made to TosSENotify.exe.
    I did get rid of the Norton anti virus program, the uniblu software and the xoftspy software that I had installed with the original problem. Do you suppose that I will need to delete and re-create the start menu items to restore them?

    The logs you requested are attached. Thank you for all your help.

    Now that you are clean, you can try running unhide.exe again. If that doesn't work to bring your programs back, then yes, you will need to re-install those programs.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
