I'm new to the forum. I see all the notes about this thing, but I am clueless. Can someone help me get rid of this garbage before I throw my computer out the window.

I need the fix spelled out to me like I was a 5 year old.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi bdil54!
Here it is spelled out in detail! Just follow it through one step at a time. When you get to it in the READ & RUN ME FIRST, don't skip over the add/remove program link, as that easily gets rid of many common bad things!

This is all greek to me. What you are saying and that post you gave me makes zero sense to me. There is no easy fix? Is there a software I can purchase just to get rid of this crap?

I am assuming that you have first gone to add/remove programs and attempted to uninstall it that way.

    To clean it all off:
I'm going to post two sets of instructions below. Each will be enclosed in separate Quote boxes. Make sure to complete the first one 100% before moving on to the second one.

ATTACH THE FIRST LOG NOW BEFORE CONTINUING OR YOU WILL OVERWRITE IT!!!! And then immediately continue on to the below steps.

    How are things working now?

Thanks Tim - sorry took me a while to respond. Didn't have the patience yesterday. Here is what I think you need after step 1:

Just to be safe....I would appreciate it if you would go to the Read and Run First thread and at a mininum, download and run the ShowNew, RunKeys, and HJT scans and attach those logs.:)

Should I do them in the order you provided?

Yes please....you can attach them all in your next post.:)
Be sure that you follow the instructions for downloading and renaming HJT. It is important!

    You did just fine!

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9"
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    MarketResearch

    Reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

    Now attach new logs for:

    * GetRunKey
    * ShowNew
    * HJT

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

There is no MarketResearch showing up in my "Add or Remove Programs" section. I also search my entire C and D drives and nothing with that name showed up.

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8"
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9"
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

Sorry - I don't understand everything, but wanted to ask this question before I attach logs.

So you want me to attach new logs. Do I have to run all 3 systems again in order to get new logs or do they update as I go and just attach them when I am done with the step:

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

    Quote:
    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{3CB70CC2-303F-4A6C-824D-013AE8CFDB6B}]

Yes...you have to run them again ...then just save them as shownew#2 or GetRun#2 or 3 or 4, etc.

The registry patch ...are you having a problem with that? If you have ""Save as" type is set to "all files"" and double clicked it ...that's all you need to do.

The GetRun log will show me if it worked.

Nope, no troubles with that - I just am not sure about logs and stuff. I have no idea what they are or mean so I wanted to ask if I should re-run them so I was giving you exactly what you are asking for.

I can't believe you do this for free. Thank you so much for all this help. I am re-running now and will have new logs for you in a couple of minutes.

    I think I re-ran them correctly.

You did it just fine, again!:)

Your logs look clean. You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including CounterSpy, etc).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
    * How to Protect yourself from malware!
