A friend of mine has a laptop that can connect and surf using wifi just fine when at my house, or his house, or any number of locations. But at the local community college, it sees the router, prompts for the WEP/WPA key which he enters, but then says it cannot connect due to not having a certifacte. I'm assuming that it refers to the certificates in IE options under the Content tab.
    Any ideas?

Has he asked the IT staff at the Community College? If he is running windows they will probably offer support.

Has he done the new certificate updates offered in windows update? I always do them even if I don't know if I need them.

Also in IE there is a place to prompt if IE can't find an updated certificate, see what his is set to. If he adds the community college to his safe list, he can probably check, accept an expired certificate.

Thanks for the info.... the dude isn't exactly "savvy" with PCs, but I have spoken to the "IT" guys at the college and they were condescending and of no help.. it was like "IE is supposed to automatically go to our 'zone wall' (or whatever he called it) and will then install the certificate from there; if it doesn't, then you messed something up and we can't help if you don't know what you're doing". This is what they told me over the phone; I can only imagine how they treated my friend in person. They supposedly have this "zone wall" which I'm assuming is a hardware firewall of some type that is supposed to automatically spring into action the first time someone tries logging in to the wifi, and from what I've pieced together, this is where the certificate comes from. The "IT" guys basically said "if it doesn't happen automatically, there's NOTHING else that can be done and you're S.O.L.". I refuse to believe that; there's ALWAYS something that can be done, and these a-holes weren't even willing to look at his laptop to see if it was simply a setting or safe-list issue.... I know little-to-nothing about certificates... anyway- thanks for the info plodr.... I'll pass it along and we'll see how it goes!
    :-D

sounds like the IT guys there are in training to be future geek squaders. ;)

There should be someone in personnel your friend can complain to about the attitude of the IT guy. They are getting paid to help and if they aren't helping, it doesn't make much sense to pay them!

You might try calling again. Maybe you will get lucky and actually get someone helpful. Also ask if there are printed instructions anywhere. Some places do offer troubleshooting sheets so they get less calls. If they have any, get your friend to get whatever they offer. It might be geek to him but you can use it.

It cant be IE if the wireless doesn't connect. Anyway, using Firefox would resolve that issue, were that the case.

    Also, did you see this?

The other possibility is, from what I have been reading, is that the laptop does not support WPA, or support the version they are using. Is it an older machine? If thast the case, then they would be looking into upgrading drivers, and getting a compatible wireless network card via PCMCIA or USB.
