I got this security toolbar 7.1, virus response lab 2009 and virus trigger on my laptop. I have tried a bunch of removal tools to get rid of it without success. I have tried Spybot, Ad Aware from Lavasoft, Norton (on the 15 day trial) and smitfraud. Nothing can seem to get rid of this crap, this is a work laptop so if at all possible I would like to get some free software to eliminate this problem. Anybody got some advice? I know enough to be dangerous but am not a serious computer guy.

    Thanks

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

    TimW,

After my initial post I started the Read & Run me first, it took quite a while but I think it solved all of my current problems. I am not by any means an experienced computer guy but your instructions were clear and easy to understand. I appreciate your guys time on it, and will let you know if I run into any other problems, but so far, the toolbar and popups and home page problems are solved.

My only question now is what do I do with all of the antivirus programs currently installed, Super AV, Spybot and such. I plan on using Avast as my main AV, Spyware blaster for preventative, online armor as a firewall. Also plan to consistently use smart defrag and cc cleaner. I will keep all of these up to date and be careful what I download.

    Thank you

Without seeing the requested logs, I can not tell if all traces of the infections are gone. :(

As to what to keep...we advise that you keep SAS and MBAM as backup scanners...all of which I would give you after being sure you are clean in our final instructions.

Looks good....though you have a lot of left overs from when you had Norton and AVG installed. You should do a search for those and remove them.

You can run CCleaner --> both the cleaner and the issues, being sure to make a backup when prompted.

    You also should uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2

    Reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6
