I have an old Sony Z505 VAIO running Windows 98 (First Edition). I cannot afford a new machine at this time, and this machine will not run any later OS because of the way Sony built it. (When Windows98SE came out they warned me not to install it because everything, including the hard disk, would stop working!!!)

Anyway, I'm running out of disk space on the machine. I want to buy one or two USB drives to use as storage. However, all the drives say they are 2.0, or at best, 1.1 compatible. I suspect this machine has USB 1.0. I tried the SanDisk USB Flash drives, even downloaded the driver, and could not get the drive to work on the machine.

Any suggestions for adding additional disk space? Anyone know of any USB drives that will work on Windows 98 First Edition?

Lexar has somenice USB drives that I have heard work very well with Win98. They offer drivers for download on their website; you could give them a try.

Ok, maybe I wasn't clear in my previous post. I cannot install drivers for Windows 98 SE. Pointing me to a site that has drivers for 98SE or tells me how to install drives on 98SE wastes both my time and yours.:(

They say their drivers will not work on Windows 98 First Edition.

Sorry about that. should have read your post more carefully... Since I was embarrassed that I didn't, I did a bit of googling for solutions, and it seems Iomega offers drivers for their mini-USB key for both Win98 and Win98SE. Can that be worth looking into?

I found this downloading page, it looks like a good starting point.

    Good luck!

Hm, yes, this might be worth looking into. Thanks.

I hadn't looked at iomega because my experience with their devices has been iffy - sometimes they work as advertised, sometimes they don't. Even the same device on the same machine...
