Seems okay - but can you confirm?

    Hello all.

    First post.

It all started with sychost error, then virtual memory being used up.
Finally I could hardly manipulate thru the internet.
I should say now that Im on DIAL-UP internet.

So I hit - I believe it was - System Restore which I understand takes the computer back in the past to way before it got infected with this thing.

I ran thru your process and now everything appears to be going well.
Still Id appreciate someone looking thru these scan reports and letting me know.

Apparently the main culprit was Rootkit.ZeroAccess (anyways thats what the ComboFix informed me.)

If possible I'd like to go back where I came from since hitting System Restore removed all my Favorites (and Ive forgotten many). More impoortant I lost some semi-important files in My Documents.

If going back is even possible and if its not recommended (since the virus will be re-introduced) then i will stay where I am.

So then here are the big 5 for you to peruse.

    Many thanks.

What are you using for AV protection?

    Use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\3203397148:3809022017.exe

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now:

    • Download AntiZeroAccess to Desktop
    • Double click on it to run it (If running Vista or Windows 7, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator")
    • Type y and press enter to run the scan
    • After the scan is complete, IMMEDIATELY reboot your PC.
    • After reboot, please attach the AntiZeroAccess_Log.txt log to your next post. This file is saved in the same location as AntiZeroAccess program.

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 7

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:

    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hello Tim:

I use AVG, (but Ive had it uninstalled these last 3 days).

Offline. I moved the CFscript into the CF desktop logo and the Autoscan starts but stalls. I tried this three times to no avail. (And I did not mouseclick or move the CF autoscan window). Each time I let it run for half an hour (it says 20 minutes should be enough).

The AntiZero scan reports that I am clear and not infected with Rootkit.

I have not yet run the Java or MGlogs.zip.

Download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop.

    1. Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    2. Click OK at the warning to continue to use The Avenger
    3. Do not change any of the check box options!
    4. Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
    5. Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of The Avenger
    6. Now click the http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/9159/executeavenger.jpg button
    7. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    8. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
    9. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    10. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
    11. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Now re-run Combo and attach the new log. Also run the Getlogs. bat and attach the new MGLogs.zip.

Go to the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky

Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Do you have your XP CD? If not:

This is a download of an .iso file of just the Recovery Console for XP.
Burn to CD with Nero or other 'disc image' capable tool and boot.

    XP Recovery Console.

You can use ImageBurn to create the disc.

Boot to the bios after creating the disc, and change the boot order to CD/DVD as first boot device. Then insert the CD and reboot. Once you are in the Recovery Console, type:
    fixmbr

then exit. Reboot to normal mode and re-run MBRCheck and attach the new log.

  10. Wallace

    Wallace Private E-2

    Jim:
I created the disc and went into Recovery Console.
Im given three choices where to put the fixmbr command:
    1/ C:\windows
    2/ D err..... minit something
    3/ D:\I386

I put it into 3 (because I saw that I386 in the Recovery folder)

    I get the error message:
THIS COMPUTER APPEARS TO HAVE NON-STANDARD OR INVALID MASTER BOOT RECORD. fixmbr MAY DAMAGE PARTITION TABLES IF YOU PROCEED. tHIS COULD CAUSE ALL PARTITIONS ON CURRENT HARD DISK TO BECOME INACCESSABLE. iF YOU ARE NOT HAVING PROBLEMS ACCESSING YOUR DRIVE, DO NOT CONTINUE. ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO WRITE A NEW MBR?"

    So I just exited.

I suppose Im supposed to type fixmbr into 1/ C:\windows?????

  11. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Yes, you should use C:\windows to type it into. Don't worry about the warning, that is standard.

    2. When OTL opens, change the Output (at the top-right portion of the program) to Minimal Output
    3. Put check-marks in LOP Check and Purity Check
    4. Now click the http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7053/runscanotl.jpg button.

When the scan is complete, a file entitled OTL.txt will be created on your Desktop.
Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Also tell me how things are running now. Your MBR is fixed.

What is wrong with it? Have you tried it again? Are you getting some message that the file is too large?

    Okay, its working now.

I had an error message saying popups were allowed on this page and to press ctrl when clicking to allow popups.

ctrl didnt help, so I disabled popup security on "tools". That didnt help either.
So just now I took the google bar off the top of the screen and everything is okay!

    Anyways, here it is.

    Let's do this:

Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.

    • Copy and Paste the following code into the Custom Scans/Fixes textbox. Do not include the word Code

    Code:
    :processes
    :files
    @Alternate Data Stream - 816 bytes -> C:\WINDOWS\3203397148:3809022017.exe
    @Alternate Data Stream - 136 bytes -> C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\TEMP:B63300D1

    :commands
    [PURITY]
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [RESETHOSTS]
    [REBOOT]

    • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
    • Click the OK button.
    • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot. Just close notepad and attach this log form OTL to your next message.

    Then attach the below logs:

    • OTL log

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Everything is working okay.

Thanks for staying through all this with me.
I did not apprehend it would be such a ramified process.

Malware cleaner was interfering with Old Timer.
I removed it and finally got the Old Timer log.

    Good to know. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

oNCE AGAIN - THANKS SO MUCH!

Now that Im clean I will put on the free COMODO ANTI-VIRUS which (hopefully?) is realtime protection.

(I was on AVG before, but I read somewhere here Commodo is better??)

Need I put on Commodo Firewall, or is the Windows firewall good enough. (At least I think I have the standard Windows -How does one go about checking what firewall one has on the computer?)

  23. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

I would suggest you put on the whole Comodo suite....AV and Firewall. It will turn off the windows firewall, which is not very effective anyway.

And you are most welcome. ;)

But my understanding is the Commodo avi/fire combo is purchase only.

You may want to get some other opinions in the software forum. I currently run Microsoft Security Essentials, SAS and MBAM ( as on demand scanners), Iobit Malware Fighter ( Pro version with a free key from Tim's give away on Facebook ) and only the Vista firewall. I don't get infected.

You could easily run MSE and the Comodo firewall. ;)
