    Hello
In reading your site I was confused whether or not to use use selective startup via msconfig always or only during virus removal.
Please let me know so I can make the change if necessary.
    Thank you

    Hi Pete

Yes its best to use msconfig only during Malware removal or as part of troubleshooting a PC issue, as this is a troubleshooting tool over a startup list manager, if you wish to manage startups then use StartupCPL or Windows Defender and its Software Explorer option.

One of the issues in using msconfig to manage startups is that if you disable a startup then subsiquently uninstall the app whos startup is disabled, the startup reference is not removed, and then its a small pain in the behind to remove it from the list.

    Halo
I am sorry for not being clearer
I type msconfig in 'run' and the system configuration utility comes up.
I use two things; 1-system restore and 2-selective startup so I disable some unecessary startup items.
I am asking if I leave it like that is it ok for regular use and also during virus trouble?(not as a trouble shooter as I do not know how)
or am I best to use normal startup and never use msconfig?
As a novice I do not sometimes understand the goals.
    Thank you

    >>I can't find the thread where I was given the link to manage startup items but it is the same as the one you give here = CPL.
After I installed it the only evidence of a program install was ,Start, all programs>starup said four things 1-windows search,2-netgear,3-Calendar,4-line detect.
I am really confused about this. I thought by installing CPL I could easily manage my startup items but instead i have what I have explained to you.
How do I uninstall this program that did not work?
    Thank you

    >>I copied the link you gave me and it did bring me to the download site.I downloaded to desktop then installed. Usually something new is visible in add/remove or all programs but there was no evidence of a new program.
Everything is running fine but that. I have not done anything with msconfig and the Normal button is selected. I am sorry if I have annoyed you but it is not intentional. I really would have liked to used that progam. I am not skilled but so far on my self learn journey, I have been able to grasp new concepts to the point where my pcs are running fine.
I'll give it another try and thank you for your help.

    Hello
Once again I followed the prompts but could not find any evidence of CPL except when I ran a search. It indicated it was a file that cannot be opend beause it has an extesion of .pf
Does this have any significance to you?

I wish I could have been able to edit my last two posts. I kept reading about this program and finally found it in the control panel's classic view. I have been using the category view for the most part.
Apologies for the time etc. but I am happy to have this neat little program.:-o
    Thank you for your patience.

    >>I have CPL installed. I disabled the HP system system tray icon with it and after reboot found the actual entry has gone from start up. It is good that I don't have the icon and the entry was not necessary.
Question, when you disable an entry with CPL should 'msconfig' appear as normal or selective startup?
    Thank you

    Hi Pete

Yes if you disable an item in StartupCPL it will not start at boot and will not be added to your System Tray list of icons and this is good for reducing the number of applications that are not really needed and eat up system reources.

But if you open StartupCPL the entry should still be there for this app but unticked like below, so that if you did need to enable it you could do.

Msconfig should be "normal" if its selective then you still are managing items with msconfig.

nah thats fine Pete, once you have set your startups or the ones you want disabled then you can revert back to your normal layout for Control Panel (check in Program Files if their is a Mike Lin or StartupCPL folder if their is then create a shortcut of the StartupCPL exe file and then drag it to your Start Menu and add to Acessories > System tools menu list, so makes it easy to open in future)

You can also check startups to see if they are needed or not here

I have made progress;Idisabled an entry with CPL and the system congiguration utility remained Normal as you said and the entry was not there. When I enabled it with CPL it eappeared in the system configuration utility and again it reamianed in the normal mode.
Question, if a startup item is disabled will the program work when you click on it from "all programs" or do you have to reenable it? I think it is the former but want to be sure before I err.
    Thank you

    Hi Pete

Good question and YES it will work if you click on its shortcut in All Programs, all you are doing is stopping some of the useless items from starting automatically, Live Messenger, Quicktime updater, Java updater, or many updaters are prone to adding into startup... majority of these applciations don update daily so dont IMHO need to be an automatic startup (checkup on the Majorgeeks main pages for updates to many apps).

TBH, I try and limit my startups to security apps and very essentials only, have 6 on my desktop, 3 are from Acronis True Image for running Auto Backups, the others are my AV and Antimalware scanner and my HP Monitor (not tried to see what ills happen with Printer if I disable, but I have enough system resources to allow this to run as its a WiFi one)

On Laptops you need to take care on what to disable as some need to have the Touchpad and WiFi apps startup.

Hello Halo -"sounds like a song"
I asssume that if a startup item is disabled, it will remain that way even if you click on the program to use it.

I presumptously sent an attachment with my desktop start up items ; would you have time to tell me which I should not disable.
As you can tell the 'print' could not capture the entire list, therefore, the second file.
No problem if it is an imposition.
    Thank you

    Hi Peter

The link I posted earlier is a good way to check them all, and its here at Bleeping Computers Startups

But to get you started as many are a personal choice, but these are what I woudl concider not needed at all

Adobe Speed Reader (never seen that spped up anything)
    NVCPLDaemon (Nvidia)
Nwiz (nvidia and these nvidia optiosn can be accessed by right click Nvidia Control Panel or Control Panel)
    Quicktime Task (Qt updater)
    SunJavaUpdateSched (Sun java updater)

The HP Software Updater is one that you could take or leave, depends if you get alot of updates from HP for your PC, if not you could periodically enable this one and run it to check for updates.

Do you do alot of scanning? if not then try disabling the Scansoft ones.

Do also note if you disable or delete any then update the application they will enable automatically again as part of the install, so will need to disable them again,

Thank you for the push in the right direction, Halo. I am saving all of this information and coordinating folders for present and future use.
I have to decide on CPL or WinPatrol then I'l start relieving my machine of some weight.

    Hi Peter

You could just forget those two and use the inbuilt Windows Defender as its Tools > Software Explorer list allows the same options to disable or delete startups, maybe worth a look to rule it in or out of the running.

I will give it a look. I like the size of CPL but I do need to see to compare.
    Thank you
