Sending a Big File

I have a pretty large (500MB) file I want to send my sister across the pond. In an unrelated issue she is having network issues, causing her to lose packets and have to restart downloads. I researched for some free file hosting web sites I could store the file for her to download, but her connection would fail before it would complete. I've split the file into numerous 1.4MB files to make the job easier, but the free file sharing sites I know of limit the user to 1 file. The idea of using Rapidshare or one of the other annoying ones with waiting times doesn't appeal to me, what with 341 files to download!

Does anyone have any suggestions of web sites that would host 341 1.5MB files? If possible I don't want to use a solution involving download helper programs (that allow you to resume downloads upon disconnection) or direct file transfer programs because she's not terrible good with computers and it's just a headache I'd like to avoid.

I use we transfer when I need to send something big. It allows up to 2 gig. I don't believe there is a waiting period like rapidshare but I've never tried. The second could be what you're looking for. It will ask to install a small applet, not a download manager. Are you familiar with the bit-torrent protocol? This is how it operates, a direct connection between your two computers, no remote hosting and can do it in one piece, no need to rar it into chunks. Read through the FAQ, pretty good service I think.

    Another to consider -

    Take the MediaFire Tour

*MediaFire's free account has a file size limit of 200MB.

Mediafire is great! Sign up for a free account so you can keep track of your uploaded files. [No spam or any problems that I have ever experienced and I have been signed up with them for 2 years]

I believe their limit is that no single file can be more than 200mb. If there is a limit on your total uploads I have not exceeded it and 500mb is below the threshold. They also don't restrict download speeds so if she can get 200kB/s on her connection it will download at that speed.

So you could split the 500mb file into larger pieces that your sister's connection could accommodate like 25mb or such and upload them all to a specific folder (such as Susie's Folder) on mediafire and she could put them back together when she completed all downloads. I think you might be going too conservative on making 341 pieces. I have never run into a limit of number of files at mediafire but your sister's connection may be better than 1.4mb without a dropout.

    Hi

We use in work either foogoo's option in Filezilla which is superb (I love FTP) or Dropbox

Wetransfer was perfect for the situation. I don't know how her transfer speeds with it were, but it's a really simple service, doesn't have an arbitrary limit on the number of files, a 2GB total. I decided against FileAI simply because we live 6 hours apart and it would be hard to get our timetables to mesh. I didn't try any other solutionats beyond that, after discovering Wetransfer.

I agree on the 1.44MB file size. I was using an archaeic version of WinRar (5-10 years old!) and it didn't have a custom size to split a file up, so I had to chose between floppy-size, CD-size and a few others. I updated to a more recent version and chose 15MB pieces instead.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions guys!

Glad it worked out for you. I agree Mediafire is a good service, I've used Zshare with good results in the past also.
