Sending fax with Win7

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but is it possible to send faxes in Win7 without a phone line? If the PC has a cable/DSL internet connection, can't a fax be sent over that connection much in the same way that MagicJack makes phone calls using a cable/DSL connection, or the way that you can make phone calls using YahooIM (and others I'm sure) over a cable/DSL internet connection? I haven't done a lot of research, but the bit I've read always says an old school 56k data/fax dial-up modem is required, but most of this info is for WinXP.... any info?

In order to do it over broadband, you would need a free or paid service. Privacy may be an issue. I can't vouch for these. Quite a few charge a monthly fee.

Do you have an AIO (All-in-One) printer/fax/copier/scanner? If you have one and you use DSL for Internet (and voice), you can probably connect your AIO directly to a phone line. I have used my Brother AIO for faxing that way.

Also, in some cases, scanning a document and sending the scanner output as an email attachment may be a alternative solution, assuming the recipient has email.

 

@ usafveteran: nope, I have neither an AIO printer or DSL (I use cable broadband at home). I'm hoping to be able to fax from within Word, or from within Adobe Reader (or another PDF reader). Thanks tho'....
