    Hello,
Thank you for your generous services. I am helping Mom with redirect virus and we have results in the MBR check log (attached). She is running Vista (64 bit). Please advise next steps.

Re: Did scans; still having problems

    Hi Again,
We did all the scans we could in the Read & Run Me section. Logs are attached. We have 64-bit Windows, so no RootRepeal log is attached.

Problem: Both FireFox and IE browsers go into redirect when: do search (usually Google), click on a link in one of the results. The problem started on 8/22/11 after clicking on a link in FaceBook to sign a petition at this site: (EDIT).

    Your help is appreciated.

You have an infected Master Boot Record (MBR)

Do you have your Vista DVD?

If you do not have your Vista DVD, you can create one with the Recovery Console (which is really all we need), here: Download Windows Vista 64-Bit (x64) Recovery Disc

    _________________________________________________________________
    WARNING

MBR infections are only worsening and sometimes (rarely) make the computer unbootable after attempting to correct it. Continue with the below if you wish to attempt to remove this infection:
    _________________________________________________________________

    1. Insert the DVD
    2. Reboot your computer
    3. At the Hewlett Packard (HP) splash screen, press Esc
    4. This takes you to the Boot Menu
    5. Select CD/DVD Rom from the selection by using the Down / up arrows (Note: It will probably be HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH40L or something similar [according to your logs])
    6. Press ENTER have you have selected the CD/DVD Rom drive.
    7. You'll hear the DVD spinning up, be ready to press ANY key when you see the following message:
    http://www.bleepstatic.com/tutorials/vista-repair-options/boot-from-cd-prompt.jpg

    • This takes a while to load (30-45 seconds)
    • When the below screen appears:
    http://www.bleepstatic.com/tutorials/vista-repair-options/setup-option.jpg

    • Choose Repair your computer
    • Now you be presented with this screen:
    http://www.bleepstatic.com/tutorials/vista-repair-options/system-recovery-options.jpg
    • Press Next
    • You will now see this screen below:
    http://www.bleepstatic.com/tutorials/vista-repair-options/advanced-recovery-options.jpg
    • Choose Command Prompt which is at the bottom of the list.
    • A black box appears on top of the previous screen. This is the command prompt.
    • Now type in: bootrec /fixmbr and press ENTER afterwards.
    • Note: There is only a SPACE after bootrec
    • Now you will see:
    • Type exit and press ENTER.
    • Now restart your computer WITHOUT booting off the DVD again (don't press a key when it says... "press any key to boot from cd/dvd...")

Once back in Windows.. Re-run MBRCheck and attach its latest log.

OK - I'm going to make a boot disk and start the procedures in your last message. Will check back in afterwards.
    Thanks,

We're having problems. The recovery disk download link in your last message is not working. The computer will not boot from the disk we created. There were only about 5 files(?) that were in the zip file. We created recovery disks using the HP utility on the machine, but when we boot off of them, the machine keeps putting us into a recovery wizard. We do not have the Vista software disks. Any suggestions?

There is only 1. Windows Vista x64 Recovery Disc.iso

What did you use to burn the Windows Vista x64 Recovery Disc.iso file?

    You can use ImgBurn
See the download links under this icon: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif

    Install ImgBurn by double-clicking SetupImgBurn_2.5.5.0.exe
Don't install the Ask toolbar that tries to install itself by default. (uncheck all of their boxes)

    • After Installation
    • Double-click Windows Vista x64 Recovery Disc.iso
    • Insert a blank DVD-R
    • Press the Write button

Then try to boot off this DVD.
    Still having issues?

Well now your MBR is clean :) Not all done though :-D

It is not recommended to use more than 1 Anti-Virus as they will conflict with each other and potentially also slow your computer down. This was stated in the READ and RUN ME.

From Programs and Features, please uninstall the below:

    • McAfee Security Scan Plus
Allow your computer to reboot if asked to.

Now download MCPR.exe to your desktop.
See the download links under this icon: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Run MCPR.exe by right-mouse clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
    • Follow the prompts, the security code is case-sensitive.
    • Reboot your PC when finished.

Now download Norton_Removal_Tool.exe to your desktop.
See the download links under this icon: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif
    • Run Norton_Removal_Tool.exe by right-mouse clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
    • Follow the prompts, the security code is not case-sensitive.
    • You should be prompted to reboot your PC, please do so now.

Are you aware of the following picture files on your desktop?
    • C:\Users\Karen\Desktop\zz92856[1].jpg
    • C:\Users\Karen\Desktop\096.JPG
Also, were you storing pictures here?
    c:\users\Karen

Now we need to make use of ComboFix by sUBs
    • Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop but do not run it!
      • If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
    • Shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into Notepad:
    Code:
    KillAll::
    File::
    C:\bbr.log
    C:\Users\Karen\AppData\Local\Temp\198615978.dat

Good to know. The rest of your logs are clean. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks a million!!! We did the cleanup and have programs loaded to guard against future events.
