    Hello MajorGeeks support folks -

After leaving my XP Home desktop PC to the care of others for some time, I have recently found it to be thoroughly infected by some seemingly deep malware. A HijackThis report is, unfortunately, impossible to run at this point.

First, the machine will automatically initiate a 60second shutdown upon reaching the user login screen, and I have not yet gotten to a point where I can disable it through a command prompt.

On the rare occasion that this countdown is not initiated, I found that the password of the two users registered on the machine had been automatically reset (and later found it is continually reset).
After using a password recovery boot CD to at least try to log on with recovered passwords *I noticed the Administrator account was not passworded.*

After logging on one of the users with a correct password all that is displayed is "WINDOWS WARNING MESSAGE!" "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer!" "Adware.Virtumonde" "PrivacyRemover.M64" with a solid pale blue background. Interestingly *I was able to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del to get to the task manager, which opens up the ability to potentially run the cmd prompt.*

Additionally, logging into any safe mode is impossible and simply crashes the system.

I've already downloaded a series of programs to tackle this issue, including AVZ, UBCD, etc. but am still not quite sure which path to take at this point. Any help... suggestions, links, whatever, would be truly appreciated. I don't have a recovery disk and so my only option is to dig in and root this thing out.

Thanks again for reading this and if there is any more information I should be able to provide even with the access restrictions I'll do my best to get them.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

It is quite difficult to help you with out more incite into what is really going on in your PC. This is where the logs from the scans in our cleaning procedure come in handy. I will give you the boilerplate instructions below for you to try and run. Sometimes it is necessary to download the tools onto another PC and then to copy them to the infected PC via CD or flashdrive. I also recommend that you physical unplug your internet connection cable on this PC as sometimes (not always) that can help with the shutdown issue. So please attempt the below, you may have to do things in stages. Even getting one scan to run even if only partially, could start to help.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
