    OK, wife woke up this morning and got onto her machine and was greeted with a pop-up from the notorious Antivirus System Pro (a known scareware program) warning about having virus on her system. She is aware enough to know that this is a scam product so she exited out of those screens and asked me to take a look at her machine. After researching a bit I attempted to follow the advice of another site, dled rkill to kill the annoying processes and tried to run it. ended up with an "Application cannot be executed the file ***** is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now." message. Had been waiting for this so I ran rkill about 20 more times, all to no avail.

    Decided to bite the bullet and run Combofix but came up with the same issue. Also have attempted to run just about everything else and come up with the same issue. Any ideas on a solution to this or do we really have to bite the bullet and wipe her completely clean with an format and re-install?

    Yours,
    Jack

    P.S. - am unable to run any of the standard Malware removal procedures due to the same problems. Also cannot get into safe mode or system recovery panel, get the dreaded blue screen each time I try.

    Please try doing the below:
    Note: You may need to download to a different computer and transfer via cd.

    • Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v

    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

    Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then doube click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

    It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running.

    Now download and Run exeHelper

    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)

    Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

    Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

    Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. It does not save a log.

    Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools

    Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:

    • C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
    • log.txt - from exeHelper
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools

    The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

    Thanks Tim but think we have it sorted out m8. Did get msconfig up and running by starting it early in the boot process before the virus could start up. Then disabled everything on startup and was able to run rkill and Malwarebyte's program. Then started with regular startup and was able to run rkill again (effectively this time) and again ran the Malwarebytes program. This got rid of most of the problem. Ran Vipre Rescue, all seems to be in order at the moment. If it goes south I'll be sure to follow your suggestions and follow up on it here. Thanks again!

    Please attach the entire C:\MGLogs.zip....not individual logs.

    In the meantime, please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\10.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\11.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\12.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\13.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\14.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\15.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\16.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\17.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\18.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\19.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\1A.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\1B.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\1C.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\1D.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\22.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\23.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\24.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\25.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\7ZSB.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\D.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\E.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\F.TMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\{943B6738-4801-4982-90EC-0442EF7AEB16}
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Temp\~DFAD1A.tmp

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Jean corzine\Local Settings\Application Data\vvelah

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\flsqvckt]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    I am not seeing any problems, Wraith. Tell me if you are having any other issues.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
