Serious problem with XP, possible malware?

    My Windows XP based laptop is frequently coming up with DrWatson Postmortem error messages that cause internet explorer to close. Furthermore, I can't open windows explorer, control panel, and other major administrative programs in windows. I can't even get into explore mode when right clicking the start menu. At times the hourglass will appear, but no program window opens. I've searched for quite some time and found plenty of helpful suggestions on addressing issues similar to this, but I can't even get through the steps in the malware removal guide.

    also, if it's any help at all, internet explorer will always default to a start page that reads about:blank and several porn links will appear in the favorites menu, regardless of being deleted.

    Have you tried running an antivirus scan (preferably in safe mode)?

    In fact, how does you PC work if you boot into safe mode?

    Please try to get the below logs which run very fast. Without logs that give us some visibility into your system, it would be difficult to impossible to help you. We could only guess which is bad.

    Download GetRunKey.Zip and ShowNew.Zip from the below links and extract all files from both ZIP files into a folder of their own. You can extract both ZIP files into the same folder. Like C:\MGTools While these tools will run from your Desktop, we strongly recommend that you DO NOT extract them to your Desktop. Please install them where recommended. Then run the two .bat files as stated on the download pages for them.
    Attach the c:\runkeys.txt and c:\newfiles.txt logs here.

    Also see if you can do step 7 of the READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support sticky thread which requests a HijackThis log. It also runs very quickly.
