I was reading the software forum, and someone had a question related to an issue they were having, and I thought we could get some mileage out of it.

So, answer the question...you can be serious, humorous, clever, innovative...anything really

What does MajorGeeks do that no one else does?

 

Nothing. They just do it better.

We are helping people in need, trying our best to fix a problem online, asking for nothing in return, not trying to sell them something to fix their pc, thats what MAJOR GEEKS is all about. ed

I like GT's answer. People try to copy MajorGeeks, but none come close

 

they don't behave like geeks!! (by which i mean that 'non-geeks' are not talked down to, flooded with jargon they don't understand, or given contrary instructions just for the fun of it).

 

The only thing I would add to laurieB' s comments, is that there is no (or very little )flaming in MG forums.

Nothing turns most people off Forums quicker than smart a*se and sarcastic comments to someone asking genuinely for advice. Bazza

The quality of the oversight is much, much better here than in many other forums like this. Something that I noticed right off the bat; when I first started posting here (and this is true to this day) is that the forum is well monitored... far better than many other "computer help" related forums out there on the web.

Maintaining the high quality of the postings here at MajorGeeks makes a huge difference IMO. The two main reasons that I enjoy participating in this forum are that it is not only "well moderated" but that the vast majority of the posters here genuinely, simply want to learn from as well as help others.

While light banter is perfectly acceptable here; all of the prats, flamers and assorted troublemakers - especially those who quite obviously have nothing but malicious or malevolent intentions - are swiftly weeded out by the MajorGeeks moderators, who quickly R.I.P their posts and threads...

These two factors are both vital in maintaining any kind of vibrant and useful online bulletin board. Many other "computer-related" forums out there do not currently have this continuity in their communities. In fact many forums; which were useful, alive and kicking (prior to the tech boom going "kaboom") seem to have cut WAY back on monitoring their threads in any meaningful way.

Therefore, the prats and pot-stirring troublemakers in many of these less-well-monitored forums thrive; constantly posting flames - or far worse, posting somewhat misleading and/or entirely useless misinformation. And others continue to simply stir up trouble entirely unchallenged or unabated; for days or even weeks, before any attempt (if any) is made by the moderators to quell their disturbances or to entirely remove them.

This is not so here, especially regarding those who for whatever reason; benignly or belligerently or blatantly provide misinformation. Posts such as these are quickly corrected or removed entirely in this forum. For this "extra effort" I’m very grateful - the efforts those who oversee these threads - as well to those who participate here and quickly report this type of abuse immediately.

My serious answer: web design - consistency and taste throughout, great overview, reliability, unobtrusive and inviting ads, people with good hearts and minds, concise, understandable and good English, method, links that work, a download site that does not take you all over the web, a fun cleanliness bordering marginally on indecency, motivation of advancement

Thats an easy one. MG has a resident Funnyware Fighter and none of the other forums do. However that may change as Funnyware is rumored to be in SP3 for XP and may make the gold release of Vista. Read an article about Gates and Torvald discussing it.

When I do a Google search for technical info. the MajorGeeks site seems to be on page 1, more often than pure chance would account for. I was originally a "lurker" with a bookmarked page, however, one day, I saw AbbySue's cute avatar, and she was giving a tongue lashing to a "flamer". By the force of her words alone, she convinced all the posters to play nice, and remove some of the heat from their verbiage. She had me. I immediately signed up, and I resolved to always play nice in AbbySue's backyard.
