Hi Major Security, I,m not sure if I am having problems because of SP2 hotfixes or if its a new hardware issue, anyway I recently installed a Medion DVD/CD-RW from Aldi (Pioneer 107D) things seemed to start going wrong with my computer, namely on start-up just as I got to my sign in, the computer screen went blue with loads of writing, some of which was as follows, *** STOP: 0X 00000027 (0X BAAD 009C, 0XF6F82728, 0X F6F82428, 0XF6 AD5F09) on the next line it had *** UDF READR_XP.SYS-ADDRESS F6AD5F09 BASE AY F6ABE000, DATESTAMP 3E81FC4F. The hot fixes I have are as follows (SP2) Q322011, Q327979, Q810400, Q814995, Q819696, this is all I have for SP2 no other mention of it anywhere else. I spoke too Medion and they say its SP2 thats the problem, as they have had very few complaints about the burner, do I delete the hotfixes or what, help!.

Also Pozzy ... whats the firmware version of the drive? ( yuo can use Nero Info Tool to find that info out .. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=120 )

from Medion's site ... one is available, dated 26/5/04 version 1.13

had to laugh at this tho...
and if you have those hotfixes then you dont have the full SP2 installed but pre-SP2 updates.

another thing when installing new hardware and you start at reboot get BSODs its a wise thing to clear CMOS ( it will set the bios settings to default so if you have tweaked or adjusted soem settings in the bios you will have to do them again )

Hi, Kodo I guess I would use Nero Startsmart, although I also have Roxio but I dont really understand how to use it properly, mind you the same probably goes for startsmart, anyway I dont think that is the problem as I have had them on my computer for a while before this started to happen.

Hi Halo, the firmware version is 1.05 so I guess I need to upgrade to the 1.13, last time I was in the Medion site I couldn't access anything with regard to this hardware, will try again, also what is BSODs? also how do you clear CMOS? one other thing should I keep the hotfixes for SP2 and download SP2 itself or should I delete them, download SP2 then download the hotfixes again.

the Blue Screen with all those letters&numbers is a BSOD.

to clear CMOS the easy way is to remove the battery on the motherboard for a minute or so... this resets the Bios infomation to default.

if you install SP2 you have no need for the SP2 hotfixes as they are updates prior to the full SP2 final release.

Hi Halo, ok got that, I'm working away from home at the moment so when I get back at the weekend I'll remove the motherboard battery and also the SP2 hotfixes, I noticed that the full SP2 is being downloaded automatically will take a while as I only have dial-up access, thankyou for that.

Hi Pozzy. I had a similair problem with my TDK 440n, let me ask you is it Roxio 6 Basic? If so, remove it and see if that works as on mine it was that. Of course somehow or another I did'nt have the problem if I went into the disc and clicked the actual Roxio program myself instead of clicking the Install Easy CD and DVD Creator from the TDK control screen. But I just bought an OEM copy of Easy Media Creator 7 from Newegg for 10 bucks instead.

I'm wondering about somthing. I have both the SP1 and SP2 upgrade CDs. The next time I do a format and clean reinstall of Windows XP - will I need to run both cds, or will running the SP2 upgrade take care of both?

SP2 will take care of both, it includes SP1 and updates from after.

I cannot get MY STATION on yahoo Launchmusic to work now ... which is frustrating since it is somewhat personalized. I have done all they asked me to do ... put launch in the exceptions....even turned off popup blocker ... bah ... I do not like this new stuff. :p

    Hello, new soldier here :)
I only had problems after SP2 install. The problem is with some icons, when I change view (Icons, Tiles, Thumbnails etc.). I changed to Tiles and explorer crashes, after that I cannot open context menu from my computer (any file folder). So after this fun I have to reboot my PC. God I love windows and Bill's funny pranks

Yes. I have yet to find anything other than those mentioned here but, one thing I know that has been affected is the simple archived hourly backup method I use for redundant backups(about as redundant as that sentence). Anyway XCOPY (the DOS utility) works no longer. I've read a few threads that deal with this on other sites with no real solutions available. Any ideas are welcomed...

Hi Final, not sure about the roxio version as it has nothing written on the disc itself, it was given to me by someone working for Time computers by way of an appeasement because my computer wasn't working at the time and the company (Time that is) didn't want to compensate me in money terms, I'm beginning to think its a copy and not a very good one at that, so I'll take your advice and remove it from my computer, I did have a problem with it sometime back, it seems to work on the laptop fine but probably not for some strange reason on the desktop, thanks for that.

    Good morning

    Some problems after downloading sp2:

    F.Drive not found.
Send pictures to cd option missing.
    Norton virus check stopping.
Home page option changing to msn from blank.

    Uninstalled again for now.

    Howdy folks,

Long time no see. I hope you are all well.

On XP home machine (Dell dimension 4300) we are having some problems. Restart after install hung on blue screen (not electric blue screen of death, but login blue color), then held down power button to shut down, started again, logged in okay, restarted and it hung on "Saving your settings" held down power button again to shut down.

The real problem is no network connection via NIC (I am working on a modem now and realizing how I take my LAN connection for granted) LAN says "limited or no connectivity". Card is CNet PRO200WL PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter. I downloaded new diver and ran diagnostic and it says "<< can't find fast ethernet controller>>".

Basicly, I don't know what to do. Any suggestions.

    Thanks,

I installed SP2 but then read A LOT of articles and forums that said it can crash your computer and is impossible to uninstall. This scared me so I uninstalled it right away. I only had it installed for about an hour or so, so I'm not sure if I would have experienced problems. Thankfully, it seems to have uninstalled without any problems. I read someone say that SP2 is VERY GOOD to download (I currently have WinXP Home Edition SP1). I am wondering with all these problems people seem to be having, if it really is something that the High-Tech guys recommend?

    Hi sue :)
And a warm welcome to you from major geeks :)
In answer to your question the answer is yes it is a good idea to update to service pack 2. AS you have stated you have installed it and uninstalled it. I would now reinstall it as you have proven there is nouthing to worry about. Just remember to do exactly what you did the first time and all should be OK. Do let us know how it goes and keep us updated on your progress over the coming weeks

    Best regards

    Not sure about it yet...

My rooomate installed it a couple weeks ago. He has ploblems browsing the internet. Every couple pages, he gets the "server not found" page. I didn't have that problem. I did the SP2 update 2 days ago and now about every 10 pages, I get the same problem. I don't know if there is another problem with our LAN, or coincidental to updating to SP2.

I have the Google tool bar with pop-up blocker, and I noticed that IE also has pop up blocker turned on. Anyone know if these are compatible? Should I turn the IE popup off?

Also, booting at startup is slower with SP2. I've already gone through the startup in msconfig and unchecked a few things, but it is still slower. Haven't looked through services yet. I suppose there are some services that may have been re-enabled after the update....

Other than those issues, I've had no major probs with SP2.

I am wondering how to turn pop-up blocker ON in IE? I know how to use it in AOL but was not aware that it was available on IE. I am still scared to download SP2! Can anyone tell me what the benefits are? Will my head explode if I just stick with SP1? My computer is my life (self-proclaimed geek) and I don't know what I'd do if something happened to it because of a bunch of extra security measures (that's what I was told SP2 is for).

SP1 doesn't have popup blocker w/ IE. Instead go to Google and download their toolbar. This blocks almost ALL popups. Sometimes it will block opening new windows that you may have requested. You will know this by seeing your mouse pointer into a hand with a yellow flash on it. When this happens, hold the "ctrl" key while clicking on the link, then it will allow the requested popup. Took me a while to figure this out...

Otherwise, I really like the google tool bar for the popup blocker.

MS .. have in SP2 limited the concurrent TCP max connections that you can have to 10!!! if you hit that limit you will see page not found errors and if you look in Event Viewer you will see a stack of "EventID 4226 TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts" listed.

    Its a security feature http://bink.nu/?ArticleID=2208

OK, Now IE is totally FUBAR'd. I'm positive that it is related to SP2. The earlier problem with my rommate's 'puter is now happening to mine. However I'm unable to do anything. Today any webpage I try to to load just stalls, and nothing happens. I'm unable to log into my email because it stalls and I eventually get the "server not found" page. Only about 1 in 10 attempts get through. However, I had to install Mozilla to view this forum and write this message, so I know it's not our LAN. But with Mozilla only about 1 in 10 don't go through. Mozilla seems to work good, but not perfect. IE worked perfect yesterday... AGGH..... I'm not in the mood to go back to SP1...

    Any Ideas?

The TCP/IP instructions posted by halo are far over my head.....

Hi Halo, Ok I deleted all of the hot fixes for SP2 and managed to down load the firmware for the burner (1.13), I also deleted Roxio altogether, I haven't had time to do the CMOS battery but everything seems to be back to normal so thankyou for that.

RJCapt .. glad you have that one sorted, with SP2 a new smaller not a problem but annoyance has appeared.. some of the services that you could disable in services are now needed to allow you to use some OS components and windows update. I know BlackViper is working on an updated SP2 list of services tweaks.

    @ Pozzy ... cool :)
BTW what version of Roxio do you have? did backtrack over the thread and noticed the CD you have doesnt have a version number!! the only version that really works with XP is one from Version6 upwards.. if you were to install it open Creator Classic and click Help > About Creator Classic and it will tell you the version.... I would tho suspect if you were given the CD a year or so ago it is most likely Version5 which has many issues with XP

A better Burner soft is either Nero or CDBurnerXP http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4242.html ( free and works well so bonus )

Next up I guess is updating to SP2? ;)

 I downloaded the Unofficial windows 98se and it crashed system!!!!!!!! I couldn't do anything on my system!! Everytime I tried to execute something it either said that I was missing several .dll or that there was an error and it had to close the program! Some help!!! I think unofficial is the key word here! I had to reformat and reinstall everything!

2 out of 3 of my installs worked great. No problem with the install or with existing apps running on the 3rd machine ---- BUT, that 3rd machine now takes 5 to 7 minutes to boot and/or shut down. Once booted, it takes 3 or 4 minutes before it will run an application. I've restored the os and reinstalled sp2 a couple of times with the same result. When I restore sp1, the machine works great. All 3 of the machines were as close to identical as I coud get them prior to installing sp1, all HP Pav running xp/pro 512meg 3.0ghz. Any ideas would be appreciated.

WHAT THE EFFING HE*L IS SP3???? We're talking XP here, right?

    You guys INVENTING updates?

There have been two new updates since SP2 was released. You don't even find out about one of those unless you have MS Office installed.

There IS NO SP3 for XP, and there's not likely to BE an SP3 for a LOOOOONG time.

Service pack 2 killed my computer!

I just installed Service Pack 2 and it royally screwed my comp. After it did the install and started reboot, as soon as it gets to the XP loading screen, it restarts again. Then when it loads up, I get the safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, last know config, etc. etc., and no matter what I select, it won't load, it just restarts again! I can't get into windows to use a system restore point. What do I do now? I can't afford to format now.

Re: Service pack 2 killed my computer!

So go back to the restore point that the SP2 installation created, then run the uninstaller for SP2 from Add-Remove Programs, and then think carefully about what might have caused the mess-up. Did you have your anti-virus running during the installation? Your firewall? ANYTHING Norton? I mean ANYthing Norton? Have you updated your installed programs? Have you checked Services to make sure that BITS and Auto Updates and Event Log are ON and AUTOMATIC during the installation of SP2? Are you SURE that your machine was virus- and spyware-free when you began the installation? Did you run chkdsk and defrag before you started?

There are several other possibilties. Take a CAREFUL look at
    http://editorsdesktop.com/SP2inst.html
for some more ideas about PREPARING successfully for a successful installation of SP2.

If you correctly prepare for this major upgrade, it'll go well for you.

    G'luck

I have the exact same problem, GOBACK says no saved restore points and I cant get into windows.

How else can I use the PRE SP2 restore point.

I know what caused mine, forgot to turn off Norton

Thank you SO much, Adrynalyne! That link helped me out and now I got XP back up and running. Screw service pack 2, it can just sit there waiting to be installed. Bill Gates is the anti-christ!

If you get that error its more likely you dont have .Net Framework installed and upto date as ATi CCC needs it to work.

next comment is not aimed at anyone in particular... but why blame MS for all of these failings? yes MS are not perfect, however when the OS goes wrong because of a new service pack its too easy to blame MS as they are the daemonic scurge of the universe™ rather than some of the 3rd party companies like Symantic for example for not updating their products to comply with microsofts guidelines? these companies are making themselfs large amounts of $$$£££ off MS's back ;)

yes MS could have issued a guideline on how to install SP2 on XP and what to disable or un-install beforehand... checking for Virii or Spyware was mentioned in articals before the final SP2 release..... A very good guide on what to do before installing SP2 can be found here http://editorsdesktop.com/SP2inst.html and written by our own Wisewiz ( Dan ).
