LUG,,,SP2 is GREAT,,,its just this patch in question,,,,,as said have been running SP2 since beta, FLAWLESS adds increased security, also enhanced other features,,additional security for wireless hotspots also that is very important I run my laptop and take it with me when on the go with me all the time, before the SP2 I had security breaches on wireless network,,someone actually was able to create a anonomous user ID and passworded it I had to reformat drive to recover,,,now with SP2 added security, have had NO PROBLEMS , at the same wirless spot I was hacked into before !!! I rate SP2 10 out of 10 !!!! JUST THIS PATCH IS IN QUESTION,,,

Glenn did you exhibit the symptoms that the loopback hotfix was issued to fix?

as this update wasnt one that would have been issued on WU for the masses it would have been issued on a per case basis and only then under instruction from MS support be sent to you.. unless someone mirrored the hotfix on a website ( I know Bink has it or did have it on his site ). If you dont show the exact symptoms that these hotfixes show then if you install them they can or will break a perfectly running pc!

as not all hotfixes are required to install..

Actually , it was on the MG main entry page and still is !!!!,,,computer was fine before patch,,,thouught I would do just to be up to date,,yes did not HAVE to install but did to just to be current ,,and yes did render my system usless to the internet connecion as I described,,,rollback to restore point fixed problem, Glenn

as not all hotfixes are required to install,,,,SO I HAVE LEARNED LOL

People need to realize their machines need to be free of certain problems, like viruses, trojans, spyware, etc., or problems will continue or worsen. I have installed this now countless times on varying hardware and configurations with 0 problems.

To be perfectly honest.. I wouldnt dismiss installing any of the service packs, well I dont I do install all of them.. even in the days of win95,98 etc all you really need to do is take care and as Major Attitude said in his post earlier make damm sure you dont have Virii or Spyware on your PC as this will not help the transition to the latest SP, also a few other things to do are make sure all software and drivers are upto date ( making sure that you have looked at wether a software vendor has updated their software to take into account the new SP .... norton were one notable company that missed the boat by a few weeks! ) and if you have backup software like Acronis True Image then make use of it to image your HD before install... if you dont have Image software then backup all important data before installing.

In life we have to take risks.. I reciently have taken a big one on a new career.. start tomorow.. scary  but treat any update like a risk and take care and you will be ok.... if all fails a re-install is not too bad... if you have all important data backed up.... if you want to take the risk and install SP2 these steps are good to follow to aid you in a smooth install http://www.editorsdesktop.com/SP2inst.html

    Hi guys,

No drama's with SP2 here although my puter seems a little slower now. Firefox and Thunderbird seem to take ages to run when initially opened. Other than that I am running, Avast, Sygate and yahelite no issues. Although like a few other peeps here have mentioned I am concerned about the non ability of the SP2 firewall NOT preventing outgoing traffic, something I would have assumed neccesary to prevent RAT traffic. I fixed that prob by not allowing svchost to access the net at all thru sygate's setup and checking windows update manually, and I have been doing this for quite some time now with no issues on this here puter. Oh yeah I put SP2 on a reformatted hard drive with XP SP1 running with no other progs yet installed.

    Mobile AMD Athalon xp 2400+
    512 MB DDR RAM

Question -- I installed it and followed WISEWIZ's step by step directions (thank you -- extremely helpful).

The compute is on a network but I just installed it on the C:\ drive of that computer (it was a test -- my boss wanted to check it all out first). I unplugged the network phone line and everything before using the install CD.

Question #1: When it was time to reboot, I removed the SP2 install CD from the D:\ drive because that seemed like common sense but I wasn't sure about that....plugged in the network cable, etc. I did two reboots (per Wisewiz and other's suggestions) and defragmentation before checking programs, etc.

Was it ok to remove the CD then?

Question #2: I ask #1 because I immediately went into the Security Center to turn off the Windows Firewall and the choice to turn it on (recommended) and the choice to turn it off were "grayed out" with the ON choice selected by default, of course. I could go in and do the "exceptions" but I want to turn off the firewall.

What do I have to do to turn off the firewall if I can't do it this way? Why are both choices "grayed out"?

    More questions:

I have to put SP2 on more systems at work and after someone kindly answers my first post...I am wondering about something else.

I disabled or turned off running processes that were showing in my system tray (and made sure there were no hidden icons).

BUT -- do I need to open up TASK MANAGER and stop any of those running processes too? If so, which ones (or which ones do I leave on?) Obviously I did ok on the first system but I want to be sure.

Short rabbit trail but along the same line -- because I defragment these computers (they desperately need it) I seem to remember that it's good to go into the task manager and stop certain running processes before defrag too (to help it go faster -- am I remembering wrong? Would it be the same processes?)

    Yes:)

Is the service disabled, or is there another firewall on the system? Some firewalls disable the Windows Firewall in SP2, IIRC.

In most cases, unless specifically told to disable something completely, killing em in the notification area is sufficient.

This was a bigger issue in Windows 9x, than 2k/XP. If you have something that is going to bre crunching data, then I would stop that, in task manager, if you can't in the notification area.

Otherwise, I wouldn't even sweat it, other than maybe turning off the screensaver.

  16. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

I'm not sure what you mean by "Is the service disabled" -- where would I check for that? I've only looked at the security center box.

Again -- It shows that the SP2 firewall is ON (but "grayed out" so I can't click or unclick it). The network has a firewall but one wasn't installed on this system, or this system hasn't been plugged into it yet I guess is the better way to put it. I was going to disable the SP2 then enable the network one.

All I've done is open up that new security center window and looked at the new firewall config that way...so I thought maybe there was another way to do it...or it hadn't been fully loaded on the system (even though it says "on") that's why I asked about the CD...

So -- no one else has asked about this "graying out" of the choices? Why would it look like that? Is that what it will look like when it's disabled?

Is there another way to "get into the SP2 firewall" to change the choice from ON to OFF?

  17. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

    Is this on a domain?

  18. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

Um, I'm really network ignorant, so I'd have to say yes. What's my other choice? It's on a domain, or it's on a __________?

It has a main server (not one of the computers the employees use) that we all put our info into that one drive P:\ so everyone has access to it, even though for each computer we, obviously, are on the C:\ drive. Is that what you mean.

  19. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

Your other option is a workgroup.

If everyone must log into said server--there is your reason for it being greyed out.

Being on a domain automatically disables it.

  20. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

Yep - a domain it is.
So - it says it's ON - the ON circle has a mark in it, but since it's grayed out it really isn't working as a firewall?

So when I'm ready to set everything up I can safely add my firewall and antivirus, etc. and I'm all set?

Thanks, you've been very patient and helpful

Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Office XP, with all critical patches.

After installing SP2, I noticed that the boot up splash screen no longer says "Windows XP Professional" but just "Windows XP" (no big deal, just something I noticed).

The main concern is my internet dial up connection will freeze when I have more than a couple of pages loaded or downloading from more than a couple of locations.

This apparently is because SP2 limits (file tcpip.sys) to 10 connections by default.

There is a registry hack or a PATCH available to change this up to 50.

I applied the patch, which conveniently makes a backup of tcpip.sys, to no avail.

My personal opinion is SP2 is good for the masses, but if you are capable and diligent with security, and especially if you don't use Internet Explorer, I can't see too many benefits.

  23. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

Yeah for me -- a Minor Geek!

I put SP2 on a computer at work and had to update a driver for the phone/fax modem that allowed the boss to use a program to dial automatically from the computer -- but I managed to find and do that. ;)

Every other program on that huge system is working fine and dandy. :)

AND I put SP2 on my system here at home just now...so far so good. :) :)

Yes I am. After installing the SP2, I now have a considerable delay, upto maybe 3mins or more, trying to access any of the files, using the Explore function, stored on either of my hard drives. I get the same response by trying to access "My Computer" from the start function

Re: Service pack 2 killed my computer!

I've spent 10 minutes looking for Wisewiz's link to this site. I followed EVERYTHING listed on those 2 pages, and I mean everything...all the updates, all the error checking, all the steps = one by one. VERY HELPFUL. Maybe you did too. If not, go and read what it says in the link below and try again.

Also, did you uninstall correctly? That sound weird but Microsoft has 2 links about how to uninstall http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875350 and how to protect your computer from damage when you uninstall http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;878454&Product=windowsxpsp2

Maybe something went wrong in one of the many uninstallations and so there's been some damage.

    Hope something here helps.

I had strife at first with my Ethernet LAN which slowed almost to a stop. A few harsh words with the set-up seems to have fixed that.
I notice that there seem to be even more of the "svchost" and "generic host processor" requests through Zonealarm for connection than before, though. Surely William has better things to do?

I think I've done the exact same thing - some Explorer pages aren't working for me or are very slow and i dont have that program running either.

Can someone explain how to get it back up in services? I tried putting it in startup menu folder, but I knew that wouldnt work. Also, am I supposed to have a file called mspmspsv.exe? Cuz I have mspmspsv.dll and then i have a mspmspsv that you have to open up with a program (not recognized right now).

If someone could help me out with instructions on how to get this program running again, I'd be grateful.

I can't reinstall sp2 and I really liked the firewall
    Ihow do i remidy that?

YES. I downloaded it to two computers via the web and in both cases got a message to the effect that windows couldn't determine the status of my virus software. I have Norton Antivirus with live updates, so I don't understand the problem. I had to answer something to the effect that I'd manage/run my own antivirus software.

SP2 didnt like Norton AV to start with .. but I know there is an update for Norton apps running on SP2

you can turn the security center off.. by going into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > look for Security Center .. double click it and set the startup type to manual or disabled

Installing SP2 required updating Nero 6. And I could no longer boot into Safe Mode, although everything ran fine normally. Turned out InCD update with the Nero update had a conflict with SP2. Uninstalling InCD through Add/Remove Programs got Safe Mode working, and Nero's latest updates (dated mid-September) have fixed the InCD incompatibility.

I am running XP home edition and I installed my service pack 2 with little complications. One of the "new" things that I noticed that bothers me is that when I leave my computer Idle (let's say I leave it doing something or I'm done with it for the night), it will eventually go to the log-in screen for XP where I have my accounts listed. It never used to do that. Since my account is password protected, I have to keep entering my password to get to my desktop again. It didn't do that before the installation. How can I stop this. I've already checked my systems options in control panel and I didn't see anything. I don't want to have to keep entering my password everytime I walk away from my computer, but I don't want to disengaged the password protect to my account. Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?

    Thanks,

    Raz

Do you have a screen saver active? or better still check Display Properties > Screen Saver and set it to NONE as new setting is there for "on resume password protect" or untick that box.

    Hi folks :)
The poll is now closed and as i expected most of you have had no trouble with installing the service pack 2. I would like to thank all the members that voted and made a reply to the thread. As for myself i installed from the Microsoft website with my setting on to automatically download it as and when the time came. You may be surprised at that but i have always found the Microsoft website to be reliable. Many thanks to all of you who took part in this poll

    Best regards
