I turned on Auto Updates just now but Service Pack 2 isn't downloading. What is going on? It is set to automatically download and then tell me when I can install.

    Hi Dark_Oppressor :)
The download will start as and when you have set the time to. This sometimes will be delayed subject to what you are doing at the time but in general the download is going on while you work. I would just leave your computer on for the next few hours and you will find a box pop up telling you that the update is ready for installing

I had set auto update to in-active because I wanted to fix my other problems first. I was un-installing McAfee yesterday and checked the add/remove programs so I could see what was left to remove if anything. I saw that SP2 has stuff on my pc now anyway. Maybe this is the wrong place to post this problem, but SP2 is the general topic, so I am hoping you don't get mad at me for this. should I be concerned about this, other than it got there without my permission ? Can it be removed without compromissing my system worse than it is already ?
Any help would be appreciated much. CT

I know this must sound extremely ignorant or flat out stupid, but I'm not going to install that service pack. Despite the recent news I've seen about a worm/trojan (seen it called both on different articles) affecting Windows XP systems except those with SP2! Download.ject is the name of the threat and the story about it can be read here. I'm sure it's probably already been posted somewhere here... you guys are always on top of things! :)

I know I must seem stubborn or dense, but it's not like that. I've gone for years without downloading Microsoft's service packs, and still remain uneffected by all the viruses, trojans, worms and mayhem going on around the internet. I do, however, download the critical updates individually... I'm not a complete moroon! :D

Yes, but all you have to do is Ctrl+Click and it overrides the popup block and opens the window.

You would be surprised how many fixes are not available individually.

Carl ... if you have a few SP2 updates/hotfixes in add remove that is normal as the time between SP1 and SP2 there were many pre-SP2 fixes that were named SP2.... if you have the full SP2 there will only be one reference to SP2 ( Service Pack 2 ) listed in add/remove plus a .net hotfix and one or two others if you use those packages as all the older SP1 and pre-SP2 updates/hotfixes/rollups are all removed as they are superseded by SP2.

no-ones going to get mad for you just wanting to be careful Carl.

I installed SP2 last night for the heck of it. I figured I'd give it a try. This "Security Center" is unwanted (by me), but the popup blocker is a nice feature. All in all, I just wanted the updates/hotfixes, and my comp seems to be running just as smooth as before I installed it, so I'm happy.

Well... I think I've run across a problem that may be related to SP2. I have DVD X Copy, which is now giving me a relentless error message (Tristana Exception Occured) upon trying to execute the program. The only thing I know to try is uninstall/reinstall to see if it makes any difference. I found another forum that supports the DVD X Copy software, and someone started a thread about SP2 and the "tristana error" but I can't seem to open the page... not even the cached page. :(

Might anyone be able to help me with this? A friend of mine wants me to back-up a few of his DVD's for him, and I can't!

Update to my original problem with DVD X Copy... I searched around in the support forums and found a guy with the same problem and read his thread. The only solution they've come up with is to uninstall SP2.

If its the same forum and thread I read @ "afterdawn" then a few of the comments are way off base as its not an SP2 bug that MS will fix... sadly 321 studios are out of business after the legal wrangelings and during that period the program will not have been updated and in all posibility will never work with SP2 if its code is not updated.

Time to look for another app or never update to SP2.

DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink are possibles?

Are you saying that you needed a new activation key so you could download SP2? -If so: have you activated XP multiple times (in the past)? -Did they offfer any explaination as to why you needed the new key?

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition. My computer recently (automatically) downloaded the new Windows Service Pack 2.0. It was about a 20min download and a 10min installation. It then asked if I wanted to reboot now or reboot later like always, and I clicked reboot now. Whle my computer was rebooting, these 3 messages came up with 5 different options.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not successfully start. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectidly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files or folders choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert most recent settings.

If this problem is due to a computer failure, power outage blahblahblah or you dont know what caused this, please choose Start Windows Normaly.

    Safe Mode

    Safe Mode with Networking

    Safe Mode with Prompting

    Last Known Good Configuration

    Start Windows Normaly

Please scroll up and choose the required option: 20 seconds...

At first I chose Last Known Good Configuration cause I didn't understand the problem in the first place and thought that to be best choice. but then when it got to the Windows XP Loading screen (with the blue bars flying below) it froze right there. So I rebooted again and tried to get into Safe Mode and remove the patch. It then froze again and this is where I seem to be stuck. Any suggestions?

    Thank you,
    Jeff

Okies, SP2 installed. No worries. Deleted a buncha left over empty keys from registry. Checked for issues with CCleaner, none. Ran Everest, showed SP2 installed. Everything still works, so far. It's clean, up and running with no probs. Very smooth process that took about 20 minutes from d/l to installed. Cool :)

I just finished installing the XP Service Pack 2 on four machines. Two brand new laptops and two "older" desktop computers.

The only problem was with my personal desktop (it figures). It broke my VPN (Smart Pass 4.2) My VPN help desk tells me that while they are acutely aware of the problem, they have no fix and no work-around other than uninstalling SP2. Fortunately I have an old laptop with Win98 SE that will enable me to log on.

Beware if you are running a VPN, ask questions first!

I agree that it's probably DVD X Copy that has the problem since I got that "Tristana Exception" even before installing SP2. Even Microsoft explained on their website that badly programmed applications, and things of that nature will cause adverse effects after installing SP2. Unfortunately, DVD Decrypter and other freeware is what I was using before DVD X Copy, and I personally find DVD X Copy to suite my needs a lot better. I've since uninstalled SP2 and will wait to see if anything different happens with it. I personally had no other problems with SP2 except the DVD X Copy thing.

Well thats computers i guess you never know what is going to happen next

I must be cursed or something...stuff like this always seems to happen to me! I run XP home and tried to download the service pack last night. After about an hour and a half, I came to realize that the download process froze. I clicked the cancel button. WHOA...MS didn't like that! Anyway, it took forever to undo what was done. Finally when it finished, I turned off the computer and went to bed.
This morning I went to turn it on and a message appeared that said the OS was now unstable and I should go to "add & remove programs" and remove SP2. I did that and in the middle of removing it another message pops up saying that if I remove SP2 now (and it lists about 20 programs) might not work after. Well I didn't have much of a choice so I continued. They were right...no mouse, no keyboard, no usb, printer...nada. I turned off the computer, waited a bit and rebooted. It took quite a while and then got to the settings screen, but without the use of a mouse or keyboard...I'm screwed. There's no where to go.
Besides using my original boot up disc, does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do?
    Thanks

    Hi abern01
Well firstly don't panic. Turn the computer off and take out the keyboard and mouse leads. If you were using usb leads switch over to a ps2 leads Restart the computer you will now find your keyboard and mouse now work. Then go to system restore and choose a date as far back as possible. This will take sometime to complete but should be successful. You may be better off doing this procedure in safe mode but see how it goes not in safe mode. Let us know how you get on

UPDATE: After letting the computer sit there for about 30 minutes, some of the functions started to work again. Once the mouse started again I was able to get in to my settings. Things appear to be working although extremely sluggish. I rebooted the computer again to see if everything would restore itself to normal, but after it rebooted my display setting went to 600 x 800 and everything is messed up! I'm going to try to retore XP to a previous days settings and hope that things go back to normal

    Thanks Nick,

I had already tried to resore it to yesterday morning's settings before I read your response. It failed and I got an error message saying it wasn't able to do it. I'm now trying to go back to a restore point from a few days ago and see what happens.

Well, the restore point from a few days ago didn't work either. My last resort is to try a restore point from May 29. That's as far back as I can go. I've got my fingers crossed (and my legs and my arms and my eyes.....)

well, I tried everything and the computer will not restore any back up points, not even going back 3 months. Now i have to reconfigure everything.
I hope this is the end of my problems. If I do get evrything back to the way it was, I'm now reluctant to try SP 2 again. Should I wait till 2a???

Scroow win sp2. I installed it, and found I could not use certain apps like Norton Speeddisk. Or Norton Liveupdate. Said I didn`t have permmision and to log off and relog back on under a user name that allows me to use it. Then all sorts of nefarious sh*te started to happen. So I deleted and restored to before sp2 installation. I am logged as the administrator, but that didn`t matter after the update. Crap.

Just so long as you understand it was third party compatiblity issues with SP2, and not SP2 itself.

It works fine for me, on a slipstreamed install.

Works fine for my wife, installed on her HP, that has numerous software issues.

Installed SP2 last night without incident.

If you read my posts from 8/27... had serious problems. After reading how well it worked for others (being a glutton for punishment), got everythig straightened out and reinstalled SP2.

The world is a wonderful place again. Everything works fine. I use Norton System Works and every aspect of it runs smoothly (I unselected the antivirus in SP2).

All in all.... I'm a happy camper again.

Thanks again for your help Nick!

how do you view the automatic update download, i cannot see how far along it is? it seems to be an invisible process

    Hi john :)
The automatic update download is an a invisible process. The idea behind it is that the files are downloaded in the background while you work. You then get a pop up message saying they are then ready for installing. However you should see the icon in the system tray when files are being downloaded and if you hover your mouse over the icon you will see in percentage terms how much has already been downloaded

    Regards

    Hi john :)
Well i am not sure then. I think it would be better to start this update manually then in your case. Just remember to have just your firewall and anti virus running in the system tray and temporally disable other software. This will ensure a smooth transition from sp1 to sp2

    Regards

OK, I have to retract my previuos statement. Everything isn't wonderful, it sucks. I reinstalled SP2 for a second time and the next day, screwy things started happening. Firewall messages are constantly poping up. The Security Center refuses to accept my instructions that I don't want to use the MS firewall, I already have one in my cable modem. Now it won't allow Norton anitvirus to turn on. The Security Center says Norton is on and operating, but Norton says my antivirus is disabled and I have no protection. Regardless of how many times I try to activate Norton antivirus, nothing happens...it won't turn on.
Lastly, SP2 has erased ALL my previous restoration points. I just have one...yesterday and it won't / can't even restore that date.
I was just on a Microsoft assisted forum and it appears as if about 15% of the people that have tried it are having nightmares with it....and I'm one of them.
Now I guess I just have to reformat...that'll take 2 days.
I LOVE YOU BILL GATES  !!!
