I thought it was infected, but after troubleshooting that with Kestrel13! he didn't seem to think so:

    The problem is,

services.exe every 5-10 seconds for 1/2 a second will spike cpu usage at 15-25% and while this happens, even any text I type is not displayed (system almost completely frozen) but then it does appear all typed after the freeze up. Web pages and games are affected too. Even the windows OS, with the start menu, or file explorer.

I looked at it with process explorer, it confirmed this, but I couldn't discern any other meaningful information as to specifically what service within services.exe is causing this.

also, at the same time services.exe spikes, every major service, basically the ones that have icons on the tray, also use 2-5% of the proc. making my proc usage chart idling look like a spike floor from 10%-35%

    Greetings, zephyr89.

Try booting your machine into Safe Mode w/Networking - while in Safe Mode try opening/using a text editor, opening a couple of web pages, etc. to see if your symptoms change.

Yeah, already did, the problem does not occur in safe mode.

That gives us a place to start.

    Go to start, run, msconfig.

Note the current state of startup and service items (whether unchecked or not).

If its in normal startup, then they are all checked.

    Start with startup items.

Disable all of them and then reboot.

If the problem is fixed, start re-enabling them 3-4 at a time until the problem returns. When it returns, note the last 3-4 you checked, and uncheck them. Recheck them one by one, rebooting each time until you find the culprit.

Do the same with services. if the startup items are not the issue.

It is tedious, annoying, and it sucks, but it does work to find the culprit.

Great. Run msconfig and in the SysConfig/Startup tab disable all non-essential items and reboot into Normal Mode. If the symptoms disappear then selectively re-enable the startup items until you find the culprit(s).

Be advised that you might disable your protection software by preventing the startup items - it would be prudent to perform these troubleshooting steps while physically disconnected from the internet.

As an aside: I noted that you're running SpyBot - is the TeaTimer running? TeaTimer is notorious for causing the symptoms you're experiencing.

Edit: Yikes - sorry, Adryn - didn't see you lurking there! ;)

Sorry, I have a bad habit of doing that :p

Good to see that great minds think alike though!

Well, all this started soon after I installed Hamachi, so I had a sneaking suspicion. And after going through all this trouble, it was hamachi, it was the first thing I specifically tried after disabling all services.

    HAMACHIIIIIII!!!

so thank you guys for reminding me to look at msconfig, I obviously wasn't thinking of that on my own.
