Setting up icons for file types....

Is there a way to associate a file type (or file extension) to a certain icon? For some reason, all the .RAR files on my PC have just a blank white icon; it looks like a piece of paper with the upper right corner folded down. This happened when I realized that TUGzip is not 100% compatible with 64bit Windows, so I removed it and installed the 64bit version of 7-zip which works perfectly. But now my .RAR archives, and generic .ZIP archives are just blank icons. It's not a big deal really, I've just ignored it for months, but now I'd just like to change 'em. It would also be nice to change some of the other icons based on file extension.

Open 7-zip, then click Tools then options. The rest should be self explanatory.

 

That solves the RARs and ZIPs, but what if I want to change TXT file icons? (for example)

 

Right mouse click the program you want Text documents to open with (Notepad.exe) for example.

And i made you a pic for the rest.

I often change individual, but never thought about all file extentions- useful

 

Also, you can use: %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll

This gives a ton more icons to choose from.

 

@ thisisu and theefool: I was already very aware of these two things but somehow I didn't consider them while thinking about my icon 'issues' :-o
