    Hey guys,

I am having trouble setting a workplace network with Windows XP and Windows 7.

I want to make sure I set this up correctly so I don't leave myself open to viruses and hacking.

The desktop is connected directly and the laptop is wireless. Assuming it was something I was doing something wrong I decided to just plug both in via cable.

Still can't get it to work.

Not sure what the issue. I looked on the internet and watched some videos of step by step procedures and can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

Plug both computers into what? (modem or router)

    Into a router.

There are probably more web pages devoted to this subject than to any other, in the computer sphere anyway. Can I suggest you have a good read HERE? It will answer your questions I'm sure.
