I am having trouble setting up remote desktop on my home computer (XP home edition) so that i can rdp to it from school (win 98se) to get my school work. i already have mstsc and mstscax.dll installed at school, but i cant configure this at home so that i can rdp to it. it says something like the host computer is not recieving connections at the time. could someone help to rectify this situation.

If Im not mistaken, (I could be) but XP home doesn't even have remote destop available to it. Only remote assistant. Therefore it would be imposible to do unless you used a third party software like VNC or Netmeetings remote desktop sharing.

That is correct no RDP in XP Home. Look into VNC...it works very well and is free.

Two steps to achieve this goal.

Step 1. Setting your system to be able to connect to through the Internet.
This page will show you few options: How to connect to a Computer/Server through the Internet.

Step 2. Exchanging info. From a remote location.
If you just want to up load and download files you can install windows IIS with the ftp part on and use it for file exchange: http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/IIS/iis1.php

Or if your system supports it: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/northrup_03may16.mspx

Otherwise the fastest and the easiest is to use Ultr@VNC (free remote control, file transfer, and private chat, program): http://www.ezlan.net/vnc.html

I want to be able to work on my text from school, and to browse the internet unfiltered. I would preferable use the remote desktop system that came with windows, I have installed windows xp professional, and set it to host mode. the only problem is that when im at school, i cant find my computer from school. i have tried my computers name, ip #, and domain but i cant find my computer anywhere. this sucks.

If you have a router, then port 3389 must be enabled and forwarded to the pc with XP pro on it.
Also, port 3389 may be disabled on your schools network which will prevent you from connecting.

I have already forwarded those ports. I will have to do some more hacking before i can find out if the school blocked 3389. Thanks for the help. I didnt think of that.

Also, consider editing your WinXP-Pro registry to make RDP listen on a different port number, and then forward that port in your router to your XP-Pro machine. You must then enter the IP and port number in the RDP client to connect, e.g. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:XXXX

You have to know the current IP at your home in roder to connect. Some chat programs reveal current IPs if you set them to allow it.
