Setting up router and dsl

Not sure where to ask this, but this seems like the right spot.
Don't have all the info, so please add any variables to an answer please.
A friends computer (unknown type) kept crashing, so sent her a laptop.
She has dsl and a router, but don't know if it was wireless or hardwired.
She can't get it online and doesn't know what to do. If the setup was wireless, I would think just look for a wifi signal, but not sure.
Any help you can give will be appreciated.
And please..step by step... I have never used a router..

OK, trying to get info, but never get the correct answers from the person.
She says she has dsl, and it is connected, but can't get it to connect to the laptop.
So she needs to make the laptop see the dsl connection. And I still don't know if it's wireless or cable connected.
Does the laptop need software to detect the modem, either wireless or cable connected? Or just need to be configured?

OK, finally found out its a Belkins router..any help?

 

One more thing I just found out, she installed software for the router, but still can't see the connection.

 

Thanks, if she can't get it to work , I told her to call her DSL provider and have them walk her thru it, or come out and look at it.
