Settings reset by Trojan?

    I have just posted a thread in the Malware section, having followed the instructions in the RUN AND READ ME FIRST page. I had already found infections (a couple of Trojans and at least one worm) using other tools. Kestrel 13 told me that there were no longer any infections, and that my problems were now down to software. In short, my computer frequently freezes; it takes a long time to open some pages (such as My Computer and Firefox); Superantispyware takes around 3 hours for a full scan (and MBAM twice as long as usual); and I cannot, for the life of me, find System Restore, even though my computer tells me that I am still logged on as Administrator.
    I was wondering if the infections had changed the settings in my computer or if something I had downloaded had done so.
    Thank you for your help.

    I can't speak about all of the problems you're currently having, but I can tell you that some of the "new" malware can even infect the computer's BIOS and therefore survive a wipe of the hard drive even with DBAN.

    @OCH ... How much RAM (memory) do you have installed? The log that usually highlights this was missing from the bunch when you ran the R&R.

    Hello, again, Kestrel 13.
    I only have 2GB of RAM, one of which was bought recently after my computer started playing up. The problem is, I can't vouch for the quality of the recently bought RAM as, well, this is China. However, it was working fine at first, then everything starting going wrong.

    Thank you. I have run RK twice, but am not sure what to make of the results.

    Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, 128 Mb
    Hard Drives: C: Total - 60157 MB, Free - 48296 MB; D: Total - 94915 MB, Free - 55817 MB; E: Total - 58530 MB, Free - 39457 MB; F: Total - 5095 MB, Free - 4975 MB;

    Put together by some young men in a unit/shop in Computer City, Wuhan, China. The software has been messed about with since then, but it is always downloaded/copied: The choice is between 'real copy' and 'fake copy'. It is about 8 years old, so has had several changes of RAM.

    When you do check the HDD, may I recommend this tool:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/hard_disk_sentinel.html

    The interface is nice, and you only need the free version to get the status of your HDD. Some functions are available for an added fee, which are not required.

    However, if this is malware related and the corruption of Windows is problematic and manually unrepairable you may have to use a software disc to perform a full repair. Service packs are available to download, and burn to disc/USB stick so you don't have to mess with Windows Update, except for the after the SP3 install.

    Thank you for that, Mekanic. I ran the program and my hdd was perfect. Could have fooled me. It looks like there might still be something still lurking in my computer or corrupted something or other.
