setup.exe for driver won't run

I am trying to install a driver for my HP deskjet 5550. I downloaded the driver from HP to my Compaq Presario running windows 98SE, extracted the files, I then try the next step which is to run the setup program and nothing happens. I tired this on my dell desktop and it seems to work fine. I recently had to get the machine cleaned up from an overload of spyware etc. Could something be corrupted not allowing the setup command to work?

 

R other setups working?? Like any other setup..?

 

You might have a firewall blocking the program, if so try disabling it then running the setup program.
Failing that, you might like to try downloading one of the drivers for it from www.driverguide.com - you have to sign up but membership is free.

 

It may b because window installer service might have been stopped by somethin..dats y b sure dat other setups r running.

 

What are your windows updates?

I tried another setup.exe and it seemed to work fine. I also tried disabling the firewall and that didn't help? HELP!

OK I have done all the Windows updates that were available. I have also performed "clean boot troubleshooting" found at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=192926 and still I cannot run the setup for the downloaded driver for this compaq. Somebody must have an answer?
