Sfc Failed To Fix - Results From Sfcdetails And Dism...now What?

OK, I am bleary-eyes and getting in over my head.

I keep getting Windows Explorer hangs which, so far, thankfully, Window has been able to temporarily fix itself.

I have bought a nice big 5TB external drive and Acronis True Image 2016 and finally (after WAY too many years of being lucky) officially have a disk image backup.

Now, on to fix this pesky Windows explorer error. I hope the sfc info is the fix.

I ran "sfc /scannow" and have some files that were not able to be fixed.

FINALLY was able to make a sfcdetails.txt file. (It took a long time to gt the commands to work. Funny think about DOS. It has to be exactly right - lol?)

I believe the relevant information, the "cannot repair" data from two sections of the report, is as posted below.

I have also attached the DISM data ...(too long for one post)

I tried (from elevated command prompt) the following: "Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth"

    Results returned were as follows...

Deployed Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Error 87
The restorehealth option is not recognized in this context.
For more information, refer to help.
The DIAM file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs
    DISM\dism.log

What does it mean? What do I do now?

I have Windows Home Premium Upgrade disks on hand, (running Win7x64), and a good internet connection.

What files do I need to replace, where can I get them, and how do I replace them?

I wish I knew what to do next.

Please help me do the right thing.

    TIA

    DrCarl

Go to Control Panel -> Programs and Features.
In the LHS pane click on 'view installed updates'
    Check whether KB3022345 is installed.
If it is, uninstall that update, reboot and run sfc again.

Note: I doubt that these SFC errors have anything to do with the Explorer hangs.

    _nullptr, thanks

Did the deeds. Found the KB3022345 and took it out. rebooted and re-ran sfc. Here are dirty details:

And, thanks for your reflection that this is prolly not related to the Explorer hangs. That is really bothersome. If you can direct me somewhere for a fix for that, I'd love it. I gpuess I shold start a separate thread. I saw something about conflicting "un-zippers" and that the registry might need a little edit....

Meanwhile, here is what sfc reports for 'can't fix'

    thanks again

To make your CBS log analysis easier, create a new text document and copy/paste the content of the following code box:
    Code:
    @echo off
    findstr /c:"[SR] Cannot" "%WINDIR%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log" >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
echo Done, Press any key to exit...
    pause>nul

Change the name of the text file to SFC_Details.bat
To analyze, just right click and run the batch file as administrator. The log will be created on your desktop.

_nullptr - thanks! I like it when success happens. I think it's success...

I ran "sfc /scannow" and was returned the message:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
In order to give you proper thanks, I test/ran the "SFC_Details.bat" you wrote/shared (TYVM). It worked, and returned the text posted below.

So, thanks...the nice .BAT file works nicely (that sure saves a lot of typing and typo-fixing), yet, I wonder...are the results anything to be concerned about?

    Thanks again,

I wish I had seen this thread sooner. An update in Windows 7 from several months back reports problems in sfc. These should be ignored.

I am going out so I don't have the time to currently look up the update nor links to the articles detailing the problems with sfc and Windows 7.
Just note that the sfc report you received can't be counted as correct. Please don't waste time trying to repair those files.

Later today i will find this thread and add the details.

    Thanks.

BTW, I acquired a 5 TB Ext drive and Acronis. I am much more comfortable now with the first real backup in place since I got online in 1986.

As much as I am driven to understand the "sfc" thing, and to want complete fixes for both the more important "explorer.exe" and "sleep no longer works" (desktop) issues, I hope my non-computer life does not have to come to a days-long halt.

Meanwhile, I am glad I can work, and to have MG.

    Explorer hangs issue
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/972685

As far as sleep or hibernate issues, I don't touch them. There are very numerous and I feel you could cause more harm than good by starting to fix this. I simply turn off the computer if I'm going to be gone for a period of time. If not, then I let it on but push the power button on the monitor to save a little power there.

ploder - I usually wait for the "OK" from Woody Leonhard's site for updates. Although he did write about that one (KB3022345) more than three times, somehow it found its way into my system. I removed it per _null's suggestion earlier in this thread.

I'll visit the link for the Explorer hang and give that update a shot.

Besides the comfort of finally having the backup base covered, one of the reasons I got that going (and am still learning Acronis) was to provide a better than System Restore 'back in time' escape in case any fixes failed.
Still, I don't want to make a career out of getting "sleep" back, so, thanks for your suggestion (although I hate losing a perfectly good function like "sleep". I wonder if sleep will return once I go over to Win10? Maybe what they say is true: "You can't catch up on lost sleep" lol?)

OK - off to the races...update...explorer....will report back eventually.

Have you ever tried SmartPower? I use it on every PC I own (5 of them). For me, it reliably sends the PC into sleep no matter what is running, but then it gives you the capability to say which processes override the sleep command. Once you get used to it, you can, for example, leave your browser open, knowing that the PC won't sleep when it's open. That would be if you add the firefox process to the processes that block the sleep command. I add media players, cleaners, browsers, basically anything that runs for a long time and that I might like to step away from the PC while running. Also, video conversion programs I add.

This works great in concert with the MS PowerTool Insomnia. SmartPower will actually overpower Insomnia (keeps the PC awake), but you can add Insomnia to the dialog, and it will block sleep. SmartPower is right here at MGs, which is great too:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/smartpower.html

I use the sleep function practically like a religion, so this program is amazing for me. One thing to note. If you use the program, add processes without the file extension. It's hard to see in the dialog, but it is explained there on the menu. Instead of firefox.exe, you would just add firefox. For RealPlayer, you would just add realplay, etc., commas between each process.

Is this the failure where the Windows Explorer window begins to open and then closes? I have those very rarely in W7, but that type of error has been around with Windows since at least Windows 98 I believe. Whether it's that or a straight hang, I don't understand why this is happening so much to you. However, looking back over the thread I didn't see where you have yet run chkdsk.

To run chkdsk, plop your installation disk you mentioned (not sure the upgrade disk will help but it might...a straight installation disk is all I have ever used) in the drive and:

Start->Computer->Right click OS drive/partition->Properties->Tools tab->Error checking (Check Now button)->check marks in both boxes and press Start->press Yes to run the process on next boot->reboot

Maybe you have disk/RAM issues keeping your PC from hitting its stride...

As well as running chkdsk, open a command prompt As Administrator and type sfc /scannow. This will attempt to rectify any problems you have with your system files. (you don't need an installation disk for either in W7)

AtlBo - Here's what happens...When I want to navigate through the tree with Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) to move a file or something, it usually works fine. I go my merry way, computing here and computing there, everything fine, and then at some random time, everything hangs including the task bar which won't un-hide itself and a pop-up appears: "Windows Explorer has stopped working" So, I click "check for a solution and restart the program" (<--something like that) and, thankfully, it fixes itself and all is well for a while. (just did it again after I closed some Chrome tabs and a couple of explorer.exe windows)

I am starting to suspect an overworked third party email program eMail Client, yet I have no idea how a program can interfere with explorer.exe. I'll also routinely have Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator, and god knows how many Chrome tabs open. 30? I have 6GB RAM, Photoshop scratch disk, page files somewhere...sometimes Indexing running (although I've excluded the 5 TB Ext drive with Acronis True Image) ... when you mentioned 'hitting its stride' I wonder if I am pushing the 'puter too hard...I thought there was no such thing. lol?

I am pretty sure I ran chkdsk, and you're right. I don't see where I mentioned that.

Earthling - yes, post #8 or so got me a clean bill of health for sfc /scannow. Regardless, I appreciate your ideas.

I'll probably run chkdsk again when I want to take a long break (I think that one takes a while).

    Thanks Geeks, Majorly...

apps for sure can cause the problem, and you have some "meat eaters" on your system. Running 30 tabs and the programs you have, you could probably stand to go up to 8 GB or even 12. 8 GB seems to me to be the magic number for multi-tasking right now with programs as they are...

I am remembering my first PC that came with 2 MB of RAM memory. It was a multi-media PC lol...even had a CD ROM and a 2.4 KB/sec modem...:D

Hmmm....meat eaters....I'll try to lighten the load and see what does or doesn't happen.

I do like to brag about my first PC. I think it was 1986. Getting online was expensive. about $24/hr for medline. I am pretty sure I have the numbers right. Toshiba laptop. LCD display (no backlight). 640 KB RAM ramped up to 1 GB with virtual (disk) memory. Processor screamed along at 8 MHz. Some could get it up to 12 MHz. Hard drive could hold TWENTY MB! I made a portable phone jack adapter with alligator clips so that I could attach my modem while elsewhere. Speed? I forget exactly, but I do remember being thrilled when I got one twice? as fast. It went 56K dialup!

Yup. Multi-media. Mine had a speaker and a display. Sometimes it'd "beep" too.
    Ahhh the days...
Now, back to Photoshop now where one image might be 49,000KB - lol

Those were the days. I first used a PC in hs. It was an Apple II donated by Jobs to our school. We learned basic and lotus and dbase on the Apple. It even had a printer, which was cool. When Jobs donated the puter, our math teacher carved out three weeks for a crash course. It was pretty in depth for three weeks. Then in college I got to use one of the first IBMs in a lab with about 20 stations. Think that was 1982, and I didn't fully grasp (not much at all basically) where it was all going. Actually, it never occurred to me to even ask myself, but I was for sure bit by the IBM. Really wanted to stay there all night and all that.

When I bought the first one in 1995, it was because I was angry at myself for letting the technology get ahead of me. My boss showed me how his company basically ran itself, and I was really angry at myself. I bought the PC and then bought Access and duplicated the company set up sight unseen in about 3 days...2 weeks with all the graphical formatting. I needed that experience I guess to know that PCs weren't going to be the same for me as for him. It helped to know that I didn't want a small company and all of that.

Boy did the bug get me, though...IBM PC master race all the way. Sorry macheads, I know it's obnoxious, but it's all about the PC for me...

You were really there at the start drcarl. Those were crazy as hell days all the way through I guess I would say Windows 98, although 95 was kind of a spoiler for me. I am grateful that it's still crazy in all the important ways as it should be...

I had a friend who was trying to get me into the hardware sales industry for IMBs. We were doing flashcards with numbers like 3033, 3090, 3125, etc. Speaking of shoulda, woulda, coulda (sorta)...I'll never forget the "For Dummies" book I saw through a car windshield...something about some internet...when nobody really knew what that was. After working in DOS, Windows 3 blew me away. I was addicted to a program called Framework that had windows. I didn't like Wordstar. One of my early lessons was the importance of printing a contact list. I formatted my C: drive, then needed help from my buddy across town (LA). Where's his number? On the C drive...LOL. Same kind of thing I learned once...after a day or two of trying to solve an issue, I did the dirty deed and reformatted/reinstalled.... only to later learn... that it was a Yahoo-side problem. LOL. I guess I was there at the start of some things. I remember when the guy who invented Basic H (and Basic I) came over and presented us. I also remember when we got the very first consumer car stereo. A 4-track. Muntz Electronics. (Earl Muntz was a friend). The breakthrough was a "continuous loop" cartridge that fed from the inside and wrapped back onto the outside. So many stories....and I wasn't even dancing in all the MGM musicals, like dad was....lol

    Hmmm...

I guess you must be about ready for a resolution to this. Unfortunately, I can't think of anything that doesn't involve testing your RAM. That would require bootable MemTest on a flash drive or CD/DVD.

It's probably one of your startups. Have you tried turning off those or booting into Safe Mode. Sorry if you mentioned either of these/both earlier...

Whelp, I got me a copy of MemTest86 (hope that's the right one) and everything looks peachy, except that my only USB is too small at 2 GB. I'll have to get a larger one.
I looked for instructions on how to do it with a CD but can't find anything.

I'd be happy to run Safe Mode, yet I don't think I can handle that screen resolution and lack of functions for a day or two - long enough to see if things are repaired.
I suppose I can stop all non microsoft startups? temporarily with msconfig. Services, too? sheesh...

    I'll run "chkdsk /f" in a minute...

I checked the logs after the explorer.exe crashed and found the following probably useless info...let me know if there are any worthwhile clues there.

    Thanks for the help

    drcarl...

    Yes, MemTest86 is the one.

I would tend to go with the notion that the error messages are related to the freeze incidents but then that the incident is being caused by something else. Not 100% about this, but those are the errors that you get the pop up for in Windows that says "such and such is not responding" and asks you what you want to do. I never have felt those had anything to do per se with the program (or usually not). I believe it's just that Windows 7 gives programs an allotted amount of time to open or the error box appears. On the other hand, I suppose a plugin in Chrome could be causing problems or some such.

Perhaps try running Chrome with plugins disabled if you haven't already. If not, and you can tolerate it, I think a few hours in Safe Mode might help you see if the problem is a startup. Or as you mentioned, you can open msconfig and uncheck all the startups that aren't Windows. CCleaner for some reason sees things that aren't in msconfig sometimes. No idea why, but if you already have CCleaner, you can use it's option for turning off startups.

A far safer way to do what that video is recommending would be to download ShellExView.
Save it to somewhere convenient, as it may come in handy in the future.
Launch ShellExView and when it finishes scanning, go to Options and Select 'Hide All Microsoft Extensions'.
Select All the items in the List View, right click and click on 'HTML Report - Selected Items'.
A report.html will be saved in the same folder as ShellExView. Zip the report and attach to your post.

_nullptr - thank you. I will get to that soon - thanks

AtlBo - I feel kind of silly. I just yanked 6 GB or RAM and snapped in 12 GB. Silly because of my smile, I mean, it's just RAM. Got my 32 GB USB 3.0 flash drive, aka "thumb drive" today, too. Sure seems like a lot more memory than the 640K I started out with a few decades ago. I was remembering my first serious Schwinn bike today, too. Maybe I'm about to die. lol?

(I wonder if I should add the 32 GB flash drive when not in use...would I have 44 GB or RAM? What am I thinking? My SSD is only 80 GB. How could 32 GB of RAM fit into a tiny thumb drive? It's FAT32 now...reformat?)

  39. AtlBo

    AtlBo Major Geek Extraordinaire

lol, maybe you are just beginning to live drcarl :). I always try to look at the bright side.

Unfortunately, I had the opposite problem yesterday. Lost a 2G stick in an 8G system. Hoping I can find a match for the stick. Luckily it's Crucial, but it's the Renditions sub brand which may be harder to find I am afraid.

I had a Schwinn mini that served me well for about 3 or 4 years until I outgrew it, but I became an avid cyclist. Loved riding in college. That was the best way to get around. I don't ride anymore, but I do have a mountain bike I keep for trips to the State Park or to get some excercise or to blow off some stress.

I think it's possible to do this, but it wouldn't be the case by default with a flash stick. There are programs out there, but I haven't tried one. At any rate, you would be tied to the speed of the port. USB 2 wouldn't be very fast as RAM, but USB 3 would actually be quite fast (like SSD). Your flash drive would have to support USB 3 for the USB 3 speed to work, though. I think the USB Flash would have to be NTFS and labelled as a logical drive, but whatever program is used for converting flash memory into RAM would probably say what is necessary. If your USB ports are USB 3.0, you might consider moving your page file to the flash drive. That would be nearly the equivalent of RAM, and it would give you some extra space on your main drive. Move page file:

    https://askleo.com/what_is_pagefilesys_and_can_i_move_it/

You know, I don't hate to say so, but I wonder if we you and later I were getting more done on those old PCs. I don't think so by a large margin, but the powerful PCs really caused a lag with OSes and other really important software like Office and so on. SW isn't really hardly worthy of the hardware, with the exception of some of the graphics programs...

sad news. even with new RAM. problem happened again with little open. will have to carry on with the other remedies mentioned. still glad to have more RAM.
(read that using the 32 GB flash, even though it's USB 3.0, as 'more' on't really help anything)

You can use flash as storage for the page file. It's an interesting technique. The page file is usually on the hard drive (not in RAM). If you don't know, it's like prefetch data that is placed in a location that is easy for the PC to get to so it can be read more quickly (backup RAM but on the hard drive). Not to speed up the PC, but the page file is large, so to gain drive space, the page file can be moved to a connected device. USB 3.0 is a great choice, because it's fast like SSD. You can gain 5 or more GB on your hard drive by moving the page file. BTW, it's not required that paging be used at all, so the file is not critical to PC operation.

drcarl, did you ever take a look at your startup programs to see what is running on boot? I still think that is likely your problem. In the start box, type msconfig and run it. Click on the startups tab and then make a list of what you see. If you have CCleaner, you can do the same thing easier by opening CCleaner->Tools->Startup. Newer versions of CCleaner have an option to export the list as .txt. You can open the file and copy/paste it in your next post very easily.

  42. drcarl

    drcarl Staff Sergeant

OK, take a look. Zipped for your reviewing pleasure.
I combined all of the startups from CCleaner/Tools.
I'm amazed at 1) how many are enabled there, and 2) how many I don't use.

Does this need to be cleaned up? (other than disabling within CCleaner Tools)

    Looking forward to feedback

    THANKS!
