Hi everyone. Workng on a lady's laptop because Firefox 42 isn't workng (but that's another can of worms that Mozilla suppport is trying to help me with).

I decided to run sfc /scannow just out of curiosity and now glad I did. sfc couldn't fix errors and to look at details in CBS.log. I'm somewhat computer literate, but, by no means close to being an expert. so this line after line of info overwhelmed me. I'd be grateful if someone would help me with sfc issues. Please don't get too technical, but I'll follow directons if my feeble mind can understand them.

The laptop is working very well now after a LOT of house cleaning, but I don't want to let her have it back until I'm confident that she won't bad mouth me to other potential customers. lol Here are the partculars, and, if 've forgotten anything, just let me know.

    Compaq Presario CQ60-419-WM
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (probabloy not kosher because BIOS shows Vista as the OS, and MS COA has been torn off)
    IE 11
Avast Free (latest verson--many minor issues found)
    all MS updates are current
Malwae scans (full system scans--latest versions + latest definitions-- oodles & gobs of cleaning with these):
    Malwarrebytes Anti-malware
    Spybot S&D
    Superantispyware
    AdwCleaner
    CCleaner
    MS Security Essentials
    Windows Defender
    Kaspersky Labs
    Trendmicro Housecall online
all servces that I KNOW are not needed as per Blackvper.com

Are all those security programs installed?
You don't need Kaspersky Labs, Avast and MS Security Essentials. The will conflict - get rid of 2.
Likewise, get rid of Windows Defender or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and Spybot S&D or Superantispyware.
And get rid of Trendmicro Housecall online.

Thanks Alf--I mean Eldon. Sorry. I knew I'd mess up in my post. Yes, I already did uninstall MS Security Essentials and Kaspersky--I knew they wouldn't work right together (want to use Avast). Ditto with Defender, Superantispyware, and Housecall--those are gone also.

    empty_pockets...

If you can get your hands on an installation disk that matches the OS (i.e. Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit) on the PC, Windows may use the disk to complete the SFC repairs that you say could not be finished. Just make sure the disk is in the drive when you run sfc /scannow...

I believe the errors that show up in the CBS log are generally created by a small number of problems usually, even though the number of errors may be very large in the scan. For the record, a clean CBS log will contain only one line entries. As for error entries, they are chicken scratch to me, but I guess the most important thing is to see if you can get an installation disk for your friend anyway. It's just really great to have one in case things really go off the charts wrong...

Thanks for the reply AtlBo. Booted from the Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit disk I sponged from a friend. Clicked "Repair your computer:

Startup repair--don't need that--finally got the old girl to boot up and shut down just fine now

System restore--won't do any good to use that--the laptop was a basket case when I got it, so any corrupted Windows files are still corrupted--Right?

System image recovery--Ha Ha These guys couldn't even keep it clean and in running order, let alone make a system image for it

Windows memory diagnostic--ran this the other night just for giggles--all is OK there

Command prompt--I'm familiar with this just enough to get into BIG trouble by myself. This is where I'm gonna need someone to "hold my hand"

This looks like it'll be a great tool for my future use too, but when I got to "Step 2: Optional" to repair Reparse Points, I got this "Run-time Error '0', and the program closes. What should I do now?

This is the best tool of it's kind.

On the right, just below Open Pre-Scan did you click the icon Open Repair Reparse Points?

No, I didn't Eldon. I'll give that a whirl. Wait a second--I just did and get the same run-time error. then I click "OK", and the program closes. Man, I'd like to get this one going. It looks like a keeper.

Well I have not seen that problem.
And I just helped a member fix Windows 10!

Wait and hope someone else has a solution.
If not, you'll have to visit the Tweaking.com Forums.
